La figura de Federico García Lorca (Fuente Vaqueros 1898) es sin duda una de las más destacadas y famosas de la literatura, no solo en España sino en todo el universo literario. Su obra e influencia no se limita a su creación poética; abarca piezas teatrales (como La casa de Bernarda Alba) y militancia cultural con la rebeldía de su vida, desconstruyendo las estéticas tradicionales, las pinturas del realismo, ciertas normativas sexuales y las corrientes socio-políticas con cambios revolucionarios. Pablo Neruda, refiriéndose a García Lorca, escribió que “desde Lope de Vega no se ha conocido en lengua española una seducción popular tan inmensa dirigida a un poeta”. Su poesía ha sido traducida a muchísimos idiomas y su lectura, representaciones, continúa presente conquistando el paso del tiempo y los caprichos de las modas. A lo que se acopla la relevancia de sus viajes por las Américas, y especialmente su estadía en Nueva York donde compuso Poeta en Nueva York (que él mismo afirma debería haberse titulado “Nueva York en un poeta”) porque encarna y proclama su experiencia del país estadounidense con la energía y frustración de una voz crítica contra la civilización capitalista, al servicio de oprimidos y marginados, con la complicidad del fantasma del tiempo, la naturaleza, la muerte, el amor pansexual, tal cual lo desarrolla en su “Oda a Walt Whitman”. Lorca formó parte de la así llamada e impactante Generación del 27, compuesta por un grupo de escritores, caracterizada por su inclinación a los movimientos estéticos vanguardistas, pero, sin rechazar la literatura que los precedió, de la cual heredaron formas típicas, una síntesis temática y formal de la lírica popular (Romancero y cancionero tradicional, la poesía árabe) y de la culta o alta (Góngora –cuya presencia por su sentido innovador fue significativa-, Quevedo, Zorilla, Duque de Rivas, Juan Ramón Jiménez, Bécquer, Antonio Machado, etc.). Configuraban sus textos un surrealismo sensual que combinaba los referentes concretos de la vida cotidiana con un esteticismo metafórico de expresiones, alegorías, leyendas, imágenes fantásticas, mitos de sueños. En este contexto, el Romancero Gitano, que escribió Lorca en su primera época poética, entre 1924 a 1927, y fue publicado en 1928 en la editorial Revista de Occidente con gran éxito, se constituyó en una de las obras más fulminantes de su tiempo porque conjura, con la perfección de un mago, tradición, popularismo y vanguardia, inspirado en su vivencia de la herencia mora, el folklore, la naturaleza de su geografía agreste, y sus negaciones. En él, fundamentalmente hermanado, gitaniza el universo y canta, con un tono de lamento amoroso, a una raza marginada y perseguida, a su cultura, estilo de vida y costumbres, ilustrando su destino trágico, porque más allá de los gitanos, son protagonistas, antagonistas y agonistas los personajes únicos de la pena negra (muerte, violencia, marginalización) y el amor conflictuado. Incluso para el mismo Lorca (como lo expresa en su conferencia-recital del libro) el Romancero gitano implica ser su “obra más popular…(que) indudablemente… tiene más unidad y es donde mi rostro poético aparece por vez primera con personalidad propia/…”
