<p>The last great creation myth of the ancient Egyptians was probably created in the second century BC during the Ptolemaic era. This myth is revealed in a text on the religious landscape of the Faiyum, called today the Book of the Faiyum. The book describes this semi-oasis with its large lake as the original site of creation, as the center of the world, and of creation's daily renewal. According to the texts and images, the sun god descends very night into the Faiyum lake, there manifests himself as a crocodile, and arises the next morning reborn as the solar child. The myth combines several discrete Egyptian concepts of creation and aligns them with the natural habitation of the Faiyum region.<br />
The present volume displays the most magnificently illustrated script of the Book of the Faiyum in detail and presents for the first time the latest research on the oeuvre to a wider public.
