<p>Excerpt from the Foreword: I had not really seen our ancestors as Nineteenth Century Immigrants, a designation, which for me always brought forth a mental image of drab times and a drab people. As I proceeded in my research I changed my mind. Here were people who were proud of themselves and of Amerca. The Carters, Fulchers and their relatives brought with them organization and merchandising abilities learned in Europe as well as skills in technology and manufacturing. They honored their religious heritage. They were gregarious, adaptable and quick to learn. When relatives names Carter and Fulcher left their native England in the ninetenth century, they left behind families who, athough they had "cheered them" in leaving industrially depreseed England, nevertheless missed one another much. So thye kept in close contact through visits and by writing regularly.
