C PHOTO INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINE has dedicated part of its seventh issue to the Middle East, a region whose suffering and turmoil have overshadowed its artistic achievement. The magazine has collaborated with groups of young Arab and Jewish artists who use photography to establish relationships which would be very diffi cult to create outside the artistic sphere. In the Collector section, we present previously unpublished archives, which preserve the visual memory of the Middle East. C PHOTO MAGAZINE has set up a new initiative in conjunction with Tisch School of the Arts at New York University (USA). The aim of the project is to encourage a new generation of academics and students to take part in the debate surrounding contemporary photography. The Persuasive Image, the winning entry in the essay competition associated with this initiative, is included in this edition. In this issue, the magazine has sought a rapprochement between East and West, giving its readers a taste of the vibrant state of modern photography.

The eighth edition of "C International Photo Magazine" explores the role of photography within counter- and popular cultures. From Rock and Roll and Elvis in the 1950s to the Punk revolution of the 1970s, to today where most counter-cultural heroes seem to be weak or unrecognisable due to the constant fragmentation of information and the economic pressure faced by young people, "C Photo Issue 8" examines the constant and unpredictable evolution of movements, which, to a great extent, drew their inspiration from the struggles of minorities. Going beyond the normal reach of the publication and in order to more accurately reflect the visual landscape of popular - and counter cultures, "C Photo" presents a mixture of photography and graphic design in Issue 8. This exhibition catalog of the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei (China, 1957), shows evidence of the growing international interest in his artistic career. Through photography, sculpture, architecture, installations and his blog, Weiwei has become an obligatory reference for other artists and particularly for contemporary Chinese art. The exhibition, Ways Beyond Art, shows legendary works such as Bubbles, The Wave and The Coca-cola Vase. Each piece has been produced from the kilns which Weiwei decided to build for firing his own work. This last, Coca-cola Vase, belongs to a series which reproduces forms of Neolithic and Dynastic Chinese antique vases with the coca-cola logo stamped on their exterior. The work is a demonstration of the irony of the artist which unites in the same object tradition Chinese culture (an ingredient which carries enormous weight in the artistic production of that country) and simultaneously and provocatively questions the way in which Chinese society is confronting its recent convergence with the West.

Whenever Gerhard Richter goes to Sils (Switzerland), he always takes photographs, some of which he paints and adds to his Atlas. Others he considers independent works of art, and has included them in projects such as the exhibition 'Nietzsche Hau in Sils'. In his painted images, a photographed reality is combined with the effects of painting. In these painted photographs, the different levels of reality in the photography interact with others from the painting. The realism (as a photographic representation) and the abstraction (as a painting which is not figurative), show themselves to be redundant when the inherent categories of the created image dissolve into one.

Ivorypress Art + Books organize the first major solo exhibition of Rovner in Spain, a collaboration between the PaceWildenstein Gallery in New York and Ivorypress. The Israeli artist defines her work as follows: "My work is not about a political situation, but a human situation." In order to formulate these questions regarding the human condition Rovner uses a great variety of artistic expressions: video production, photography, painting, printmaking, sculpture and architectural intervention. The exhibition and the published catalog include 23 works produced during the past five years, and the spectacular video installation Fields of Fire.
