This handsomely produced series aims to provide students of mediaeval Hebrew manuscripts with a simple, convenient tool for identifying types of writing hands and for assessing the provenance of undated manuscripts on the basis of comparison with manuscripts bearing dates. Each specimen manuscript is represented both by a sample page, generally reproduced in its actual size, and by a table showing the different forms taken by the letters of the alphabet in that manuscript, produced by graphic artists. These tables may be likened to morphological indexes, aiding the scholar in identifying similar letter forms by breaking the writing down into its individual components. The sample pages supply the texture, character, style and general impression of the writing hand.

Specimens of Mediaeval Hebrew Scripts, Volume Two: Sefardic Script (English and Hebrew Edition)

Tanhum Hayerushalmi composed his 'Sufficient Guide' - the only lexicon ever composed to the Mishne Tora of Maimonides - in order to explain the difficult Hebrew words in the text to readers of Judaeo-Arabic. Aiming to give each Hebrew term a precise definition in Arabic, he examined its root and brought a quotation to show its use in context. In the entries, which are arranged alphabetically, the author compares the halakhic terms with expressions drawn from the Bible and its translations into Aramaic and Arabic, categorizes them, and sometimes points out their etymological connections. The sources for his explanations include the writings of Judah Hayyuj and Jonah ibn Janah, the Arukh of Nathan ben Yehiel, and Maimondes' Arabic commentary on the Mishna. All these elements make the Lexicon of great importance to research on the history of the Hebrew language in the Middle Ages in general, and to the study of Hebrew lexicography in particular.

In the Escorial manuscript, the text of Tractate Nezikin of the Babylonian Talmud is presented in the center of the page. Below it, in the margins, is the legal digest of Isaac al-Fasi; on the right and left of the folios are the rulings of Maimonides; and at the top of the page, in a narrow strip, is the text of the Talmud Yerushalmi. The surprising discovery of this text places at the disposal of researchers an additional version of the Talmud Yerushalmi for the tractates Bava Qama, Bava Mezi`a, and Bava Batra. In its style and formulations, the Escorial manuscript represents a different and usually superior tradition to that represented in the Leiden manuscript and shows an affinity to one of the ancient, reliable fragments from the Cairo Geniza. A survey of European libraries turned up thousands of fragments of Hebrew manuscripts that had been used as covers for archival material. These included fragments of Yerushalmi Neziqin, which are preserved today in archives in Bologna and Savona in Italy. They are included in this new printing, with Introductions describing their genealogy and the nature of their formulation and style. The Savona fragments provide a further textual witness to the Sephardic-Oriental tradition of Yerushalmi Neziqin preserved in the Escorial manuscript and in the Cairo Geniza fragments, while those from Bologna provide a further witness to the western-Italian tradition preserved in the Leiden manuscript.
