This book seeks to make the Gaelic heritage of piping more accessible to pipers. It is an alphabetical list of the Scots and Irish Gaelic names of tunes in 61 collections of Highland bagpipe music published from 1876 to 1986. It gives a correct spelling and pronunciation of each, an English translation, any other names for the tune, and the collections it appears in. Many are pipe settings of Gaelic songs: the first lines of chorus and first verse are given, for looking up the songs in collections or on Internet. The royal road to good timing and expression in piping is to have had a mother who sang Gaelic songs to you. Next best, you can listen to those songs now, and learn to sing them yourself. Hearing the Gaelic songs in your head as you play the tune on the pipes can bring new insight to tunes that you have been playing for years. 
 The book has a note on the Celtic harp, from which some pipe tunes derive, and a sketch of the Queen Mary Harp (from about 1450, and now in the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh). 
 In addition to "Ar canain 's ar ceol" [Our language and our music] there is a rich heritage of Celtic art, from jewelry and carved stones and illuminated manuscripts. Knotwork panels and other decorations are shown and discussed (from the Book of Kells, ca. A.D. 800, now in the library of Trinity College Dublin). These wonderful designs are used in pipe music books, on sporrans and other Highland dress, and on silver pipe mountings. They are very much a part of piping tradition.

They are set in 1970's America, from West Texas and California to downstate Illinois and upstate New York and coastal Maine. A few sequels are added: Conrad is taken to hospital and has his thumbs reattached. Robert is discovered next morning clinging to a steeple, and is rescued. This book is not suitable for small children who believe in Santa Claus: In the English, Santa comes home and tracks ink all around the house. Mrs. Santa takes the rolling pin to him and banishes him to the reindeer shed. It is intended for older children and grownups. Der Struwwelpeter was written in December 1844 by Frankfurt physician Heinrich Hoffmann as a Christmas gift for his three-year-old son Carl Philipp. He put it together very quickly from funny stories that he used in his practice. He told these to frightened child patients while making pencil sketches to illustrate, and the children quickly forgot their fears and could be examined. It is sometimes theorized that the stories are too frightening for children, but Hoffmann knew better - from practice. The book was published in October 1845 and became an instant and perennial favorite. New editions and imitations and parodies and translations are still appearing every year. An Internet search for "Struwwelpeter" returns over 400,000 results. There is a Struwwelpeter Museum in Frankfurt at Schubertstrasse 20, a short walk from the Palmengarten entrance. Helping to support this museum is its "Freundeskreis" (Circle of Friends). Membership - se the museum website - is US$30 per year and open to all. It includes a subscription to the annual Struwwelpost - a journal of Struwwelpeter news and scholarly articles.

The original illustrations and German verses are shown side by side with new, closer, English translations. These concentrate on copying Busch's use of simple straightforward language whose natural prose rhythm follows the 2/4 meter of his lines so well. The translations try to follow the originals as closely as possible, word by word, line by line, picture by picture, until at the very end of the last "streich", where the putting of two small children to death in such a gruesome manner, for such minor mischief, is taken as a punishment more appropriate for the two monsters who would do such a thing.
 New water coloring has been added to the pictures. A page at the end describes the making of "Suncatchers" - stained glass window hangings - in the shape of figures from the book. The front cover, instead of the usual portrait of Max and Moritz, shows the picture of the two dancing in delight as the bridge collapses under the tailor; and the back cover shows the same scene in stained glass.
