One of the founders of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, Philip William Otterbein was a German Reformed pastor and itinerant evangelist. He was born on June 3, 1726 in Dillenburg, Germany. After attending the Reformed Seminary at Herborn, he emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1752 as a missionary to the German settlers, where he led several congregations before he was called to be pastor of the Second Evangelical Reformed Church in Baltimore, Md., in 1774. Throughout his ministry he traveled as an evangelist in Pennsylvania and Maryland. A friend of the Methodist Francis Asbury, he also worked closely with Martin Boehm, with whom he drew together the United Brethren. Otterbein and Boehm were elected the first bishops of the church, which later became the Evangelical United Brethren (EUB) Church, following the merger of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ and the Evangelical Association. This denomination later merged with the Methodist Church to become the United Methodist Church. Otterbein died November 17, 1813. In addition to Otterbein UMC, Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio is also named after him.

Julius Chambers had a craving for adventure in his blood. When he left Cornell University in 1870, Indians were not to be fought east of the Missouri River. Without the aid of wealth or influence, the author attained his ambition at the age of thirty-five and enjoyed a glorious existence. Alexander Stepanovich Popov (1859-1905) was a Russian physicist, inventor of communication equipment and lecturer. The best years of Popov's short life were spent in a school that was destined to become the cradle of radio. Here he worked for eighteen years, from 1883 to 1901. He came a youth without a stable place in life, and left the Torpedo School a recognized scientist that had glorified Russian science with an epoch-making contribution. This period of Popov's life is of extraordinary interest not only as it concerns the biography of the inventor of radio, but also it regards the history of the theory of electricity and its practical applications. The Popov Gold Medal is awarded annually by the Academy of Sciences of the USSR to Soviet and foreign scientists for outstanding scientific work and inventions in the field of radio.

This textbook is designed primarily for students specializing in electrochemistry, but will be found useful by post-graduates, research workers, and engineers concerned with this field in industry. It is based on the theory of electrochemical systems originally developed by L. V. Pisarzhevsky and considers, stage by stage, the laws governing electrochemical processes and their peculiarities distinguishing these processes from ordinary chemical reactions. It discusses the equilibrium of electrolytes and the non-equilibrium phenomena occurring in them. Consideration is given to electrode equilibrium, including the structure of the double layer between the electrode and the electrolyte and perturbations caused by the passage of a current across the electrode-electrolyte interface or by deviations of the electrode potential from its equilibrium value, finally, the kinetics of the most important electrode processes is explained. The course covers the basic elements of modern theoretical electrochemistry, presenting them in logical sequence - from equilibrium to kinetics. The material within each part and chapter is arranged so as to reflect the historical development of the field in question. The book contains much factual material in the form of tables and figures. Professor Lev Ivanovich Antropov, at the time of the original publication, was the Head of the Department of Electrochemistry at the Kiev Polytechnic Institute. He was a member of the Mendeleyev Chemical Society of the USSR, the Conite National des Dejives Tensio-Actifs de l'URSS (C.I.D.) and the Editorial Boards of "Electrochemistry" and "Corrosion Protection" (USSR) and "Corrosion Science" ( G.B.) Prof. Antropov published extensively in Indian, American, and British journals as well as in the USSR and had lectured in India, Japan, Poland, West Germany and the USA. He is the author of some two hundred works mainly in the field of the theory of electrochemical reduction of organic substances, of corrosion inhibition by organic compounds and electrode kinetics. He had formulated a new correlative or scale of potentials (also known as the reduced scale of potentials) Prof. Antropov was Vice President of the Third International Congress on Corrosion in 1966.
