Information is presented on prestressed concrete. Benefication of aggregate by heavy-media separation, elastic fractionation and hydraulic jugging and benefication of sand through attrition are discussed. Currently a reexamination of the effect of maximum size aggregates is being made, and significant results to date are included. The use of water-reducing, set-retarding admixtures is sometimes advantageous. Their application and use, together with precautions to be considered, are described. Thermosetting plastics, principally epoxy resins, have great versatility. Their application to bonding of concrete and their use in minor repairs are presented. 
Information is presented on the application of mortar lining and coating to steel pipe. Methods of test for pozzolan acceptance, evaluation tests for chemical admixtures, a test for lightweight particles in aggregate, and a relative humidity test for concrete masonry units are included for the first time as test designations. The section on concrete pipe manufacture and testing has been enlarged to reflect changes in specifications. A checklist of inspection items for field construction, which should be helpful to inspectors, is included.

Darwin in his Introduction states the following:"The share which worms have taken in the formation of the layer of vegetable mould, which covers the whole surface of the land in every moderately humid country, is the subject of the present volume... I was led to keep in my study during many months worms in pots filled with earth, I became interested in them, and wished to learn how far they acted consciously, and how much mental power they displayed. I was the more desirous to learn something on this head, as few observations of this kind have been made, as far as I know, on animals so low in the scale of organization and so poorly provided with sense-organs, as are earth-worms.  Charles Darwin, born on February 12, 1809, was a famous English biologist and the father of evolution, grew up in England and as a young man he earned a reputation among scientists as an amateur naturalist, particularly in the identification of beetles. He started to study medicine but changed his career to study theology at Cambridge. In 1831, at age 22, Darwin was invited to travel as an unpaid naturalist on the voyage of the Beagle, an expedition that lasted for years. Darwin was observant, well read and prepared for such an opportunity. During these five years, he studied the animals, plants, land formations and fossils of many countries and islands, and kept a journal and specimens for future studies. One of the places that Darwin visited during his trip was the Galapagos archipelago. He stayed there for five weeks and studied the flora and fauna of the islands. His first task upon return was to review his journal and organize his collections. By the time he had finis! hed, at the age of 29, he had developed much of his theory on the evolution of species. But Darwin was not ready to publish his theory until he had gathered enough supporting evidence. He spent 20 years on this task, and in 1859 he finally published On the Origin of Species by Natural Selection. When this work was first published, the edition sold out immediately, but the newspapers and scientific journals attacked Darwin's theory.

In his lifetime Liu E had achieved success as a physician, author and humanitarian. His work on the Yellow River, the opening of the Shanxi iron mine, the distribution of rice to starving people in Beijing, the discovery of the oracle bones and the writing of The Travels of Lao Can were achievements any single one of which might have made a man proud. But active, creative and at times even luxurious as was his life, it was tinged throughout with bitterness and melancholy, the melancholy of all far-sighted Chinese of that period. In his own introduction to The Travels of Lao Can, Lie E explained that the book was wrung from him as a cry of anguish: "Now we grieve for our own life, for our country, for our society and for our culture. The greater our grief the more bitter our outcry; and thus this book was written. The game of chess is drawing to a close and we are growing old. How can we refrain from lamentation?" So he expressed his sadness at the decadence of the Qing dynasty. The use of language, observations and detailed descriptions all show the author's originality. Among late Qing dynasty novels, The Travels of Lao Can is, artistically, a prominent work.

In “The Lighthouse at the End of the World,” Jules Verne is seen at his simplest and best. No antecedent improbability here has to be made good. The remoteness of the scene where the drama is laid supplies an element of dread of which advantage is skillfully taken, and the shortness of the period over which the story is extended adds excitement to the race against time which the villains of the piece are compelled to make in their attempt to escape justice. The rest is pure action, courage and resourcefulness pitted against ferocity and power of numbers, with no merely invented complications to retard the issue. As a simple adventure story “The lighthouse at the End of the World” must be declared a little masterpiece.
