Michael Toogood has opened a new door onto these islands and his breathtaking photography gives a vivid insight into the places and the lives of the people who live there. There are some fascinating archive shots taken by his father, the late Stanley Toogood, who during his fifty-year career as a commercial photographer in The Bahamas, catalogued the growth of the modern Bahamas until his death in 1987. This photographic tour of The Bahamas includes an introductory text by Bahamian journalist and writer Larry Smith.

In de jaren ’70 en ’80 bracht uitgeverij Van Oorschot een reeks op de markt, ‘Russische Miniaturen’ genaamd, een aanvulling op haar ‘Russische Bibliotheek’ met gecanoniseerde turven uit (hoofdzakelijk) de 19de eeuw. In de reeks ‘Russische miniaturen’ verscheen korter werk van 20ste-eeuwse Russische schrijvers.De Egyptische postzegel bevat Osip Mandelsjtam’s verzamelde alles bij elkaar nét iets meer dan honderd pagina’s. Mandelstam schreef echter proza met de densiteit van poëzie. De verhaallijn van het titelverhaal wordt overwoekerd door talige associaties, wat een dromerige of nachtmerrieachtige toestand schept.We dwalen door Sint-Petersburg in het voetspoor van ene Parnok. Het gaat Parnok niet voor de wind. Deurwaarders hebben zijn huis leeggehaald. Parnok zit zo diep, dat hij zijn familie een cynisch voorstel ‘Familie van me, ik stel jullie een familiewapen een glas gekookt water.’ Als dan ook nog eens zijn overjas gestolen wordt, zet Parnok de achtervolging. Het is februari en dus koud, ‘de zwarte suiker van de sneeuw zakte onder je voeten weg’ en onrustige massa’s bemoeilijken Parnoks zoektocht. De staat is ‘verdwenen, als een baars ingeslapen’, en armoede dreigt voor ‘bij de tandartsen begonnen de stifttanden te verdwijnen.’Regelmatig verdwijnt Parnok uit beeld en richt de auteur zich tot ons. Hij voelt niet alleen armoede, maar ook de toenemende repressie en censuur. ‘Dierlijke angst tikt op schrijfmachines’, lezen we elders in De Egyptische postzegel. De stad zélf is angstig, ‘de paleizen stonden er wit van schrik bij’. Parnok is, als personage, niet meer dan een bliksemafleider, iemand die de angsten en zorgen van zijn geestelijke vader op zich neemt. De schrijver drijft het personage voor zich uit, schuilend in uitweidingen en associaties.Er kleeft geen avantgardistische pretentie aan dit proza; de verbazende taal is niet gezocht moeilijk, de auteur is slechts aan het freewheelen. Het vrije waaien van de geest vs. de belemmeringen van de censuur. Wat een wonderlijke leeservaring levert dat op.Ik merkte dat je best een stukje leest, herbegint, een stukje voortleest, weer herbegint – en bij elke herlezing opent Mandelstams universum zich ietsje meer en lichten er details op die je bij een eerdere lezing wel over het hoofd moést zien, om de draad niet kwijt te raken. Honderd bladzijtjes proza, stap voor stap te veroveren.‘Zo ontstaan er in de kantlijn van kladbladen arabesken die hun eigen bekoorlijke en verraderlijke leven gaan leiden’, schrijft Mandelstam. Het is mooi, dat deze brutaal-poëtische teksten onverwacht, als in de kantlijn van het boekbedrijf, weer verkrijgbaar zijn.
