This is a soft cover exhibition catalogue for Vija Celmins for a traveling exhibit which began at the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, 118 S. 36th St. Philadelphia, PA (NOV 6, 1992-JAN 17, 1993). It includes black and white and color photographs of the works exhibited, Celmins Exhibition History and a Bibliography. Vija Celmins (1938) is an acclaimed Latvian-American visual artist best known for photo-realistic paintings and drawings of natural environments and phenomena such as the ocean, spider webs, star fields, and rocks. Her works are held in the collections of over twenty public museums, including the Art Institute of Chicago, Baltimore Museum of Art, Carnegie Museum of Art, Centre Pompidou, Paris, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, High Museum of Art, Kunstmuseum Winterthur, Switzerland, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, TX, Museum of Modern Art, New York, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia Museum of Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Menil Collection, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

The work of Tacita Dean consists primarily of 16mm films and sound pieces in which process, transformation, and coincidences play vital roles. Static camera positions and long takes are characteristic of her films, creating a sense of stillness in their moving images. Her methods are highly flexible: she allows chance to intervene during the phases of preparation, filming, sound recording, and editing in such a way that she continually finds new directions for her work to take, instead of directing it with rigidity. Her films merge fact and fiction. Both the physical world and our private worlds are depicted, with the relationship between them central to the work. She often employs the coastline and sea as a motif in her work, suggesting a fascination with the elemental idea of the sublime. This first monograph on her work accompanies a show at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona, and will be a welcome introduction to a young artist whose work has earned her significant praise.

Conceptions of “nothing” are one of the driving themes of twentieth-century art. One thinks of Piet Mondrian's reductivist approach to abstraction, Marcel Duchamp's contention that art resides in ideas, not objects, Mark Rothko's painterly reach for the sublime, Andy Warhol's affirmations of the vacuity of Pop culture. The Big Nothing will focus on themes of nothing, nothingness and negation in contemporary art and culture, surveying the legacy of these and other manifestations of absence made manifest in contemporary art. Artist include Gareth James, Jutta Koether, Louise Lawler, Richard Prince, Yves Klein, Bernadette Corporation, John Miller and James Welling, among others. Given its broad connotations, “nothing” provides general audiences with immediate access to looking at and thinking about the art of today. Part of a pan-Philadelphia cultural event initiated by the ICA, in which the city gives itself over to the art of nothing.
