A dark and brooding photographic investigation into the less glamorous side of prostitution and the people and bodies that occupy this world. In his accompanying text Philippe Azoury captures the atmosphere found in these images succinctly; In the obscure darkness where flesh, words and thought disappear in a pool of putrefaction, deviation and excess seem to have granted them special awareness of what it is to exist. Their voiceless cries express the unbearable feeling that their own existence has gone too far. The bare crudity of the human condition fixed on photograph.

Petersen visited Séte, a French port and sea-side resort located on the Mediterranean Sea, as a pretext to harvest a collection of images full of precision, emotion and surprises. Astutely aware of the human dimension that he was encountering Petersens 65 harsh, grainy black and white photographs, capture the city, its inhabitants and surroundings, finding solace and beauty in the ugly and ordinary.

Photographer Vanessa Winship lived and worked in the area of Eastern Turkey for almost a decade an explosive region containing the borderlands of Iraq, Iran and Armenia. Struck by enduring images of rural schoolgirls wearing little blue dresses and their delicate status within politically loaded discussions over borders and identity, Winship systematically documented her encounter with them. The result is a fascinating collection of images, each of which tells a simple story while also documenting these girls in their fragility, grace and without any form of posturing.

Carefully cropped photographs eliminate the faces of her subjects, yet focus on the make-up, the augmented breasts, the jewels and sequins, the manicured nails and de hors de d oeuvres. Juliana Beasley was born in 1967 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and began her photographic career as a printer for Annie Leibovitz, later freelancing for the village Voice, covering New Yorks nightlife. Beasleys style is intensely personal. She first became one with her subject when she immersed herself in the world of exotic dancing in the 90s; not the shiny gentlemens clubs of the big city, but the honky-tonk, dollar-a-beer strip bars. She danced in clubs in four states, working with the girls, taking their pictures and chronicling their stories. The result was her book Lapdancer. When she arrived in Sète, assigned to draw her own photographic portrait of the town, Beasley landed in a totally unknown place in every sense. A small city in France, miles away from her usual milieu of New York nightlife, presented a very different scene. What is Sète about?
