This was a multicomponent site that included a 13th century Mississippian charnel house and cemetery and a catastrophically-buried Early Woodland component. The total excavation this cemetery provided additional information on 13th century Mississippian burial practices, health and social organization. The Early Woodland occupation contained extensive midden deposits as well as hearths and pits. These cultural features, along with the grog-tempered ceramics and contracting stem points, formed the basis for the definition of the Florence phase (300-500 B.C.). This phase has its closest connections to contemporaneous cultures in the Mid-south.

Go-Kart North represents the first major Late Archaic, Titterington phase base camp excavated and dated in the American Bottom and is significant for its impressive knife and projectile point assemblage. The several hundred features excavated at the Dyroff-Levin sites represent part of an important terminal Late Archaic Prairie Lake phase base local.

This newest addition to the American Bottom Archaeology series reports on the Dash Reeves site, an extensive Middle Woodland habitation site that represents a major floodplain village and locality for the production of stone tools. The village area consists of clusters of pits and a dense refuse heap containing hundreds of diagnostic Middle Woodlands artifacts: an extensive collection of lamellar blades and blade cores, projectile points, Hill Lake ceramics, a diversity of flake, blade, and core tools, and several exotic Hopewell-like pieces, including earspool and human figurine fragments. Inhabited between 150 A.D. and 300 A.D., during the Hill Lake phase, Dash Reeves appears to have been an important locus of interaction with peoples far to the south. The production of blades at Dash Reeves, especially those made of local colorful red and blue Ste. Genevieve cherts, possibly served as the focal point of a far-reaching blade-exchange system in the Midwest. America, the American Bottom Archaeology series documents the excavation of sites affected by the construction of Interstate Highway 270 on the Mississippi River floodplain in Illinois counties across the river from St. Louis. The series is cosponsored by the Federal Highway Administration and the Illinois Department of Transportation. Volumes on individual sites are supplemented by a summary volume on the FAI-270 Project's contribution to the culture history of the Mississippi River Valley.

The Dash Reeves Site: A Middle Woodland Village and Lithic Production Center in the American Bottom. Vol. 28 (American Bottom Archaeology)

This small volume reports on the results of excavations at two sites: Fingers (11S333) and Curtiss Steinberg Road (11S823). At the Fingers site, two late Stirling-phase Mississippian structures and 14 associated pits were located and excavated. Each structure could have housed a nuclear family of up to six or seven people. If treated as a single settlement, the site would have been occupied for a minimum of eight years. At the Curtiss Steinberg Road site, the distribution of surface debris suggested that there were three discrete adjacent occupation areas. One of these areas intersected the project right-of-way and was excavated, revealing an isolated early Stirling-phase structure.

The archaeological field investigations at Sister Creeks site (11F15) consist primarily of mapping and testing remnants of Mounds 61 and 62-part of a group of 23 Hopewellian mounds and three village areas that make up the Sister Creeks site. Identified features and artifacts recovered are all associated with the Middle Woodland period (Hopewellian) occupation. Our excavations at the site provided detailed information on the construction of the two mounds and provided new botanical and faunal subsistence information about the site's Middle Woodland inhabitants. The current project also provided an opportunity to analyze the important Schoenbeck collections obtained from the mounds during salvage excavations in the 1940s. The Schoenbecks found numerous burials and Hopewell Interaction Sphere materials, including copper celts, bear canines, cut human and animal mandibles, pipes, pearls, and other grave goods. Together, these data sets and the author's comparative analysis of the Sister Creeks excavation results with other excavated regional Hopewellian mortuary sites provide important new information on the mortuary practices of Middle Woodland peoples in the central Illinois River valley. This report is preceded by an important short historical essay by James B. Griffin on the early development of Illinois Hopewellian studies.
