A young Confederate soldier from sunny Virginia found himself shivering in a Dakota blizzard, while scurvy rotted his teeth. What was he doing there and why? The answer lies in the 300 Virginia soldiers who “galvanized” into the Union army. These were men from Union prisoner of war camps who enlisted in the United State Volunteers and were sent west to fight Indians. Why “galvanized?” An iron bucket coated with zinc is said to be “galvanized,” but it is still an iron bucket; thusly a Confederate clad in Union blue is still a Confederate, hence the slang term of the 1860s, a “galvanized Yankee.” Over 3,000 Confederate POWs volunteered to shed their prisoners’ rags, get new uniforms, pick up new muskets, and travel as far west as New Mexico and Utah, to guard the stage coach and telegraph lines, the only links between the east and west coasts. This first-ever study of Virginia galvanized men begins with a geography of western roads, rivers, and boundaries, and the horrible deaths from malnutrition, disease, and scalping. The author fully probes the cruel and intentional camp starvation promoted by one Union colonel. The book concludes with a complete roster of every soldier, including Confederate service, camp experience, Union service, post-war pensions, and, in most cases, burial plot location, tombstone description, and widow information.

Today, politicians wage vicious war over entitlements and welfare, but there was a time when citizens expected nothing from the Federal government except mail delivery. The Civil War changed all that. Beginning with small payments to seriously wounded soldiers, the system expanded step by step until age alone could bring a pension. In 1890, 37 percent of the entire Federal budget was in direct payments to veterans or their widows. At least a million Union soldiers applied for pensions, and a huge new structure was built just to house the army of clerks and examiners who shuffled papers and verified records. (It is now the National Building Museum.) This story of the pension industry begins with the author’s own great-grandfather who was a multi-millionaire, yet collected a Civil War pension. His widow was still collecting her share as Franklin D. Roosevelt began the New Deal. The whole pension system became a Perfect Storm, in which at least five factors reinforced each other. The first, of course, were the veterans themselves with their disabilities, both real and imagined. Then there was George Lemon, whose national newspaper agitated in every issue for increased benefits. Politician “Black Jack” Logan’s wild-eyed oratory gave further momentum to the call for more benefits. The Republican Party rode to decades of success by promising veterans bigger checks, and finally there was the Grand Army of the Republic, the greatest lobbying group in American history. One of the strangest conflicts in veterans’ industry was: Who was the oldest living Civil War veteran? In an analysis based on the original records, the author shows that almost all of them were complete frauds. The strange and often amusing tales of their self-promotions and political sponsors are little gems in our nation’s story. To give visual immediacy to the words on paper, one whole chapter is devoted to photographs of the hideously wounded men who survived the war. As for the South, with the Confederacy gone, each state took its own path in providing pensions or lack thereof. An analysis of dozens of Virginia pensions tells much of suffering and local politics. Based entirely on original historical records, Was Grandpa a Freeloader? opens a light-hearted but factual vista onto a largely forgotten half-century of the story of our nation.

This is the story of Left Hand, a Hunkpapa Sioux, who served General George Armstrong Custer as a guide, scout, and messenger during the campaign that ended at Custer’s Last Stand. Left Hand, was given an honored funeral by the warriors who fought Custer. Government records and primary sources document Left Hand’s service as a scout and warrior, but the reasons behind this service remain a mystery. Left Hand was a member of the sub-tribe of the Sioux Nation known as the Hunkpapa Lakota, part of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. Through conversations with his friend John Eagle Shield (a relative of Sitting Bull and Medical Director of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe), his own knowledge of the Battle of the Little Bighorn, and a rudimentary understanding of Lakota language and customs, the author was able to piece together what happened. Some questions remain, but the fact that Left Hand joined the U.S. Army, honorably served out his full enlistment, rejoined his own people just before the Battle of the Little Bighorn, and died defending the Sioux and Cheyenne from Custer is recorded by the Hunkpapa Lakota at Standing Rock.
