This reconstruction of the anonymous and untitled ancient church order that was formerly imagined to have been the Apostolic Tradition of Hippolytus is distinctive from other modern editions of it in two ways. First, it draws on an early Ethiopic translation of the missing original Greek text that was only published in full as recently as 2011 by Alessandro Bausi and, except where there is a surviving passage in Greek, employs it exclusively to fill in the gaps in the incomplete early Latin version, rather than the much later Coptic, Arabic, and Ethiopic translations that had to be used prior to that. This has resulted in some significantly different readings. Secondly, it displays what are judged to have been successive chronological layers within the church order in a more visual manner by the use of distinctive typefaces for each of these strata from the second century to the early part of the fourth century, and it accompanies the translation with explanatory notes designed to help the newcomer understand better the evolution of the text

The Use of Hereford, a local variation of the Roman Rite, was one of the principal diocesan liturgies of medieval England before their abolition and replacement by the Book of Common Prayer after 1549. Unlike the widespread Use of Sarum, the Use of Hereford was confined mainly to its cathedral and diocese, which enabled it to maintain its individuality until the mid sixteenth century. This monograph examines the Use of Hereford in the context of the British diocesan rites in general, as well as considering its possible Lotharingian origins during the late eleventh century and its surviving sources, both manuscript and printed. In addition to its more familiar missals, breviaries and gradual, lesser known sources include fragments of early Hereford service-books dismembered at the Reformation, and now hidden away as binding or archival scrap in libraries and record offices. The distinctiveness of the Use of Hereford is also discussed as well as the possible reasons for its continuation, due probably to its cathedral's unique constitutional and liturgical identity, which enabled it to maintain its integrity in a Province largely dominated by Sarum Use.

The Church of Ceylon, in Sri Lanka, is an extra provincial Anglican church whose two dioceses are locally run but with oversight from the Archbishop of Canterbury. Christians, and in them Anglicans, are a small group in a predominantly Buddhist and Hindu country. There is a well know history of violence and hostility between various groups in the country, including the recent bombing of churches. This context leads to an existential need to engage in inter-faith dialogue and contextualization. Are Christians essentially drawn out of their culture and become foreigner in Sri Lanka? In the Church of Ceylon there has been a long tradition of inculturation in dress, architecture, music, and liturgical text. This study tries to bring this story to light. While questions of inculturation and contextualization are of importance throughout the Christian church, the story of the Church of Ceylon is not well known. It deserves to be known better and is an example to other parts of the Anglican Communion. While each context is different some of the work in Sri Lanka will be of help in other places where there are significant Buddhist communities.\nThe book is authored by several Sri Lankan experts in liturgy, and an Englishman, who has worked as editor. From the Back Cover This Study tells how from early times the Roman Catholic mass was generally celebrated with the priest facing East across the altar. The people thus saw the back view of a vested minister performing a ritual largely hidden from them; and any consequent sense of the solemnity and even the secrecy of that ritual was viewed as integral to the nature of the sacrament, to be honoured and preserved. The Churches of the Reformation took a different view, but the Roman use sailed on undisturbed, and even reinforced, by the radical attacks of the Reformers. This was the use which was imitated by the anglo-catholic movement in the Church of England in the nineteenth century, and then widely adopted in Anglicanism. However, the Study shows that in the twentieth century, within the Roman Catholic Church itself, questions arose as to whether this practice was theologically necessary or pastorally helpful. Some experiments preceded Vatican II; but it was in the wake of the post-conciliar liturgical reforms that changes spread across almost the whole of the global Communion - the eucharistic president taking his position behind a freestanding altar, facing westward, or, as stated here, versus populum. This in turn provided the people with a full view of what he did, with implications for both his ceremonial actions and for their participation. The story did not end there; and the Roman Catholic Church has seen a reaction led or supported by some eminent leaders, including Pope Benedict XVI. Evaluating the theological principles of that reaction has provided extra colour to the Study; but the author's final words concern 'Best Pastoral Practice Today'. The author, Neil Xavier O'Donoghue, is a priest of the Archdiocese of Newark, NJ in the USA, and is currently the vice-rector of the Redemptoris Mater Seminary in Dundalk in the Archdiocese of Armagh in Ireland.
