The topics covered in this book include: commercial surrogate motherhood; designer babies and the so-called commodification of children; abortion; justice, life expectancy and social inequality; human reproductive cloning; posthumous insemination and consent; altruism and the reasonable pursuit of self interest; bodies, persons and human embryos; justice, fairness and the taxation of tobacco; organ and tissue donation and consent. What, were it to happen, would be for the best? What ought we to do? These are different questions. It is not necessarily any one's business nor the business of state to bring about that which, were it to happen, would be the best outcome. Best known as author of All the King's Men, Robert Penn Warren has been called 'the pentathlon champion' of American literature. In an age of specialization he published, over a period of some sixty years, biography, ten novels, short stories, poetry in several kinds, major criticism, socio-historical comment and a play. Deeply a Southerner, he emerged as the most versatile and productive member of the Fugitive Group who met in Nashville, Tennessee between 1915 and 1928 and included Allen Tate and John Crowe Ransom. This study examines the economic and social consequences for Glasgow of the global crisis of capitalism known as the Great Depression, and how this is represented in five realist novels published during the 1930s. It is argued that the inter-war era  was a time of both cultural renaissance and political revolution, and a liminal moment in Glasgow's history, defining economic and social conditions in the city for most of the twentieth century. It was also a significant phase in the development of the narrative of the city, creating a new form of literary representation of Glasgow, and a new genre of urban realism in Scottish literature.

In a wide-ranging and thoughtful Introduction, Crawford argues that politics and the pulpit have been inter-dependent from the middle ages - but more especially since the Reformation when political preaching became synonymous with the preaching of men like Luther, Calvin and, in Scotland, Knox.
