Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (18391892) created some of the most spectacular designs in 19th century Japanese woodblock prints. The last comprehensive overview of Yoshitoshis work was published almost twenty years ago, but advances in scholarship since then have resulted in a re-evaluation of his work. This publication draws from the Ed Freis collection, which was assembled over the course of thirty years. It illustrates numerous works from Yoshitoshis early career, including several prints that have to date not appeared in Western language catalogues.The two essays in the volume by Chris Uhlenbeck and Amy Reigle Newland take new approaches in the discussion of the art and life of Yoshitoshi, and depend little on the usual, at times dubitable, sources frequently used to paint a portrait of the artist. Chris Uhlenbeck offers insight into Yoshitoshi through a discussion of extant prints. He charts the development of Yoshitoshis work from the late 1850s, when he received his first substantial commissions from various publishers, to his death at the age fifty-three in 1892. Amy Reigle Newland establishes Yoshitoshis position among his peers using contemporary accounts found in types of popular guidebooks known as nazorae saiken(ki) (riddle guidebooks) and in the emerging press. The more than 160 illustrations in the volume are fully annotated. Ed Freis has selected a handful of Yoshitoshis signature works to highlight the details of process and variant editions. Maureen de Vries succinctly describes the often complex, layered iconography of Yoshitoshis imagery. Robert Schaap has created a valuable pictorial appendix of all Yoshitoshis documented serial works.

Kawase Hasui (1883 1957) was one of the leading advocates of the shin hanga (new prints) movement in Japan. Water and Shadow: Kawase Hasui and Japanese Landscape Prints is the first publication devoted to prints from Hasui s earliest and most creative period of woodblock print design, which lasted from 1918 through the Great Earthquake of 1923, when many of his early prints were destroyed. Waves of renewal traces the history of Japanese printmaking following an era of decline beginning in the late nineteenth century. The early twentieth century witnessed the emergence of two principal printmaking movements. The first--shin hanga (new print)--reinvented and revitalised the conventional genres of landscape, beauties and actors. Shin hanga adhered to a traditional production method that was based on the cooperation between artist, block-cutter, printer and publisher. At the same time, it strove to forge a new visual language in both style and technique. The second--sōsaku hanga (creative print)--was inspired by the dialogue between Western and Japanese art and aesthetics. In the main, sōsaku hanga adherents advocated the participation of the artist in the entire creative process from design to production. Waves of renewal is the most comprehensive publication to date to focus on the holdings of the Nihon no hanga collection in Amsterdam. The 277 prints included showcase the sophistication of shin hanga and the boldness of sōsaku hanga. An introductory essay sets the stage, followed by ten shorter essays by noted scholars in the field that centre on aspects integral to our understanding of early to mid-twentieth century Japanese printmaking. "The Suikoden" is the Japanese adaptation of the 14th-century Chinese vernacular novel "Shuihu zhuan", which recounts the exploits of a group of brave and righteous rebels on Mount Liang. "The Suikoden" was enormously popular in Japan during the 19th century. It was Kuniyoshi€™s initial designs for the single-sheet print series "The one hundred and eight heroes of the Suikoden (Tsø»zoku Suikoden góketsu hyakuhachinin no hitori)" -- in which the full-length portraits of the heroes are charged with a new sense of dynamism -- that spurred a "Suikoden" craze in Edo (present-day Tokyo). This publication reproduces the 74 known designs of the series in full color, each accompanied by an explanatory text. Many of the designs still inspire Japanese tattooists, and supplementary information on this subject is also included in the book.

Of Brigands and Bravery: Kuniyoshi's Heroes of the Suikoden

Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) is considered one of the greatest Japanese print artists. He dominated the 19th century alongside the illustrious names of Hokusai, Hiroshige and Kunisada. A prolific and multi-talented artist, Kuniyoshi portrayed the historic heroes of Japan's warrior past. Kuniyoshi's sense of humour surfaces in his prints of comical or satirical subjects (giga-e). In his more traditional rendering of beauties and actors his strong and transparent style always shines through. By using over 300 examples from public and private collections, the author has managed to produce a comprehensive overview of the artist's abilities. This publication was produced on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Society for Japanese Arts.

Heroes and Ghosts: Japanese Prints by Kuniyoshi 1797-1861

Surimono (literally "printed object") are privately published prints inscribed with a dedication and/or poem(s) that touch upon everyday themes. This catalogue accompanied an exhibition of the same name at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Included in the catalogue are 116 colour and 40 black-and-white illustrations of prints drawn from the Rijksmuseum collection. The book also contains in-depth essays by Charlotte van Rappard-Boon and Lee Bruschke-Johnson that discuss the history of surimono and the subjects depicted in the prints, which include seasonal references and classical themes. The catalogue contains English translations of all the poems that appear on the prints. This publication is not just an exhibition catalogue, but is also an important reference work in the study of surimono.

The main body of this work is a translation of Jawa Yuki and Jagatara Yuki written by Lord Tokugawa Yoshichika (1886-"1976), or Marquis Tokugawa, about his travels to Java in 1921 and 1929. Seen through the eyes of an enlightened liberal Japanese aristocrat, who was educated as a biologist and historian, the reader is provided with a unique portrayal of Dutch colonial society, the splendour of Javanese sultanates and the social life of the Japanese community in Java, as well as detailed descriptions of the island's abundant nature and rich cultural heritage. This travelogue is a welcome addition to contemporary Western views of colonial Java and obliges current academic scholarship to reconsider its premises about the pre-war social relations between the Japanese and indigenous society within the Dutch colonial theatre state. The diary is preceded by an introduction placing the author and his book in a historical setting. A large number of carefully selected photographs depicting Marquis Tokugawa's journey have also been reproduced. Marquis Tokugawa (Lord Tokugawa Yoshichika, 1886-"1976) was the 19th heir of the Owari-Tokugawa, the branch of the Tokugawa family which established the Shogunate in the early seventeenth century and ruled Japan until the Meiji Restoration of 1868. Unlike many of his peers from a similar aristocratic warrior background, he did not enter the diplomatic service or embark on a military career, but read history and biology at Tokyo Imperial University. He founded the Tokugawa Institute for Biological Research (1918) and the Tokugawa Institute for History and Forestry (1923), and established the Tokugawa Art Museum in 1931.
