Lucy Fitch Perkins was forty-eight when she was approached by a publisher friend who, impressed by her talents as both an illustrator and writer, which he knew through correspondence, urged her to write. He was so earnest that she thought of an idea for a children’s book the next morning, and she immediately set to work making sketches and preparing the idea for presentation. The publisher came to dinner at their house the next evening and she showed him the idea. His response was immediate “go ahead and write it, and I want it”. That book was The Dutch Twins, the first in what became a long running and wildly popular series. Here we publish another in that series, this time the historical 'The Spartan Twins'.

Wilkie Collins was born on January 8th, 1824 at 11 New Cavendish Street in Marylebone, London. A novelist, playwright and author of short stories, William Wilkie Collins was a popular figure in Victorian literature which was further enhanced by his charm and flamboyant lifestyle. He was a friend and collaborator of Charles Dickens. His own talents outshone most other literary figures and he is credited with the introduction of the modern detective story with ‘The Woman In White’. Other achievements were ‘The Moonstone’, ‘All Year Round’ and ‘Amadale’. In all Wilkie Collins wrote some 30 novels, 14 plays, over 60 short stories and at least 100 nonfiction essays. He died from a paralytic stroke on September 23rd, 1889, at 82 Wimpole Street, and was buried at Kensal Green Cemetery in West London. Catharine Graves is buried with him, following her death in 1895. Here we publish ‘A Rogues Life’. Willa Sibert Cather was born on 7th December, 1873 and although born in Virginia grew up and was educated in Nebraska, the eldest of seven children. Although she moved to Pittsburgh for a job on a woman’s journal and later to New York City for an editorial post, her successful novels were about frontier life and informed by her experience in Nebraska. The western state’s harsh weather and dramatic landscape coupled with the multi cultural immigrant communities and Native American families forging their lives amid such hardships provided a hugely rich seam that she skilfully and movingly expressed in her work. She was critically acclaimed for these books and awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1922. Willa was a very private person and whilst she often dressed as a man, nicknamed herself as William and had significant relationships with women, most notably with the editor Edith Lewis who she lived the last 39 years of her life, her sexual identity is not really clear. Willa Cather died 24th April, 1947 having received the Gold Award for Fiction, a prestigious prize awarded once a decade by the National Institute of Arts and Letters for an author’s body of work. She was aged 73 and buried on a hillside in New Hampshire where her tombstone reads: The truth and charity of her great spirit will live on in the work which is her enduring gift to her country and all its people.

Jerome K Jerome's early life of poverty exacerbated by the death of his parents in his early teens helped to cruelly mould the young Jerome. After early stints on the railways, as an actor, a journalist, a school teacher, a writer and a solicitors clerk he had some minor success with a collection of comic memoirs "On The Stage - And Off" about his earlier stint as an actor. Shortly thereafter he married and his honeymoon on the Thames became the inspiration for Three Men In A Boat. This of course was a wild success both critically and commercially and also his creative highpoint. Although he was now able to write full time he was never able to attain all the heights of that classic humorous novel. However he was prolific at the shorter form and it is from that rich seam that these stories have been mined. Here we publish another of his classics 'Idle Ideas of 1905'.
