<p>This first full-length critical study explores the relationship between David Hockney's art and life, but focuses attention firmly on the work itself. Having won the gold medal and London's Royal College of Art when he left in 1962, Hockney has gone on to become the most widely acclaimed British artist born in this century. In recent years his work has been nowhere more celebrated than in the United States, which he has adopted as his primary home. When Hockney discovered Southern California in 1963, he realized that he was uniquely suited to capture pictorially the idyllic vision of carefree existence that Americans associated with that place and time. Many of his paintings of domestic scenes and intimate relationships throughout the 1960s and 1970s continued to reveal and define a way of life that is distinctly American.</p>
