This book reproduces in facsimile with added scholarly notes and essays a scrapbook made as a birthday present for 3-year old Christine Stampe by her grandfather, Adolph Drewsen 1803-1885 , and his friend, the author Hans Christian Andersen 1805-1875 . Andersen's contributions to the scrapbook included numerous rhymes and other inscriptions and five elaborate papercuts. His verses are provided in Danish and in English. The work reproduces in color numerous examples of 19th-century illustrations and other printed matter that were cut and assembled into the scrapbook. The dust jacket of this copy is price-clipped and shows minor wear and soiling. It has small tears at the edges including a half-inch tear with loss at the head of the spine. The jacket spine is faded. Inside there is an inscription penned on the front free endpaper and the embossed mark of a previous owner on the half-title page. Otherwise, this copy shows very minor wear and soiling. Unpaginated. cloth, paper dust jacket. 4to.

Welbeck leaves Mervyn to die, and Mervyn eventually wanders out into the street and collapses. Mervyn is discovered by Dr. Stevens sitting on a bench. He is suffering from yellow fever, and since Dr. Stevens has pity on him, is invited into the Stevens household.

Theodor Herzl was the founder of modern Zionism. His early life, however, gave little inkling of this. Until 1895 he was no more than a 'boulevardier', a moderately successful playwright, and the Paris correspondent for Vienna's leading newspaper, Die Neue Freie Presse. In short, he was an assimilated nineteenth-century Jew. The Dreyfus Affair was to change that. In a feverish, semi-mystical state he wrote a pamphlet The Jewish State: an Attempt at a Modern Solution of the Jewish Question that was to affect the lives of literally millions of people. The claim has been made, with no exaggeration, that it was as important to Zionism as The Communist Manifesto was to socialism: it set in motion the plans that led to the modern state of Israel. From then on Herzl devoted all his energies to his vision of creating an independent, sovereign Jewish state. The man who could note with such conviction in his diary that he had founded the 'Jewish State' after organizing and leading the first Zionist congress in 1897 would hardly have been surprised when, fifty years later on 14 May 1948, the State of Israel was proclaimed.
