Cichlids of the genus Tropheus have fascinated aquarists since they were first exported from Lake Tanganyika in the late 1950s. It may have been their "unconventional" shape, or the fact that females brood their offspring to a relatively large size inside their mouths, that initially appealed to hobbyists. They are still some of the most popular cichlids kept in aquaria. Over the years much has been said about their incredible diversity of coloration, with almost any new area collected in the lake resulting in new variants, and the emphasis in the aquarium literature has almost always been on the number of variants, morphs, or species that exist in the lake. Behaviorists have, however, discovered that Tropheus species exhibit unique breeding behavior not recorded from any other group of cichlids. The "Fishes of Pennsylvania" is certainly not a new subject. Edward D. Cope (1881) and Tarleton H. Bean (1892) authored early inclusive accounts of the fishes from Pennsylvania. Henry W. Fowler authored multiple reports and annotated lists focused on the fishes of Pennsylvania, culminating in "A List of the Fishes Recorded from Pennsylvania," published in 1940. Dr. Edwin L. Cooper authored the commonwealth's first regional reference book, "Fishes of Pennsylvania and the Northeastern United States," published in 1983. In the intervening years between then and now, a wealth of information has become available due to the authors' efforts and those of many others. After nearly twenty years in the making, Dr. Jay R. Stauffer Jr. (Pennsylvania State University), Robert W. Criswell (Pennsylvania Biological Survey), and Douglas P. 'meeli southeast' and L. meeli is now restricted to the forms found near the type locality; a new species was found along the shores of the Mahale Mountains and is referred to as L. sp. 'hecqui mahale'. Neolamprologus: the species at Kombe, Zambia, previously thought to be a possible hybrid between N. pulcher and N. savoryi (Konings 2015) is now regarded as a separate species, N. sp. 'kombe'.
