This work offers an eloquently written collection of observations and reminiscences focusing on the years before, during, and after the Civil War. Special attention is given to Petersburg, Virginia, in the 1850s, naming many of its citizens who belonged to the medical profession or were members of the bar. Businesses, churches, politics, schools, hotels, and taverns are discussed in detail. Subsequent chapters discuss the politics of the ante-bellum period, the author’s experience in the Fourth Virginia Battalion during the war (including the siege of Petersburg), and the events following the war, with commentaries regarding the demoralization of the South, “the Carpet-bag Government and its Curse,” and “Opinions of Some Eminent Northerners on the Reconstruction Period.” Throughout the book, the author names significant political and military figures as well as those who served by his side on the battlefields. Undertaken in 1872 and requiring twelve years to complete, this book includes much more biographical information than most genealogies, and is not simply a list of names and dates, but a descriptive anthology of family history. Some of the means by which the author gathered this vast amount of data included writing letters, interviewing relatives, calling upon clergymen, postmasters, town clerks, and lawyers, and advertising in local newspapers and historical magazines in America and Europe. It traces the family lines from the ancient Scandinavian Northmen who were the ancestors of the early Normans in France to those who eventually settled in Scotland, Ireland, England, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York, Maryland, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, Kentucky, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Georgia, Vermont, Shetland Islands, and Maine. Families are grouped according to the regions they inhabited, and all available genealogical data is provided. In addition, the author gives long discourses regarding the origins and changes of the surname (including sixty spelling variations), coats-of-arms, the traditions of Christian names in the family, and the ancient Northmen and Normans. The index contains surnames of those who intermarried with the main family. The appendix contains anecdotes, "gleanings and notes," occupations, addresses of residences in England, graduates of Oxford College, and authors. Following an introductory essay on African heritage in Indiana, this well-researched book presents the story of pioneers of color who came primarily from North Carolina and Virginia, and bought land in Orange County. Fifteen chapters cover the founding of the Lick Creek Settlement, known locally as “Little Africa” and situated now in the Hoosier National Forest area; plus abstracts of land, marriages, wills, estates, indentures and apprenticeships, and certificates of freedom records (1823–1851) found in the courthouse. This volume also provides data from the “Register of Negroes and Mulattos” mandated by the 1852 Indiana law; sketches the twenty soldiers who fought with the U.S. Colored Troops during the Civil War; summarizes pioneer religion and churches (including colored membership in white Methodist churches, the advent of African Methodism, and the establishment of African Methodist Episcopal (AME) and First Baptist Churches); lists the cemeteries and burying grounds; discusses early Indiana education and the racially segregated Dunbar School (1911–1937); and, tells about the seasonal employees in the French Lick and West Baden Springs resort hotels who formed their own Knights of Pythias and Masonic lodges early in this century. Contributing a vital history of Midwestern African Americans in the antebellum era, this book also includes a wealth of genealogical data. Histories of the Scott, Roberts, Newby and Thomas families are presented with details collected during the author’s travels in Indiana, Ohio, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, and Canada.
