Revered by Chinese connoisseurs and literati since the Tang dynasty (618-907) or earlier, scholars' rocks have been little known in the West. As refined indoor kin of the more widely recognized Chinese garden stones, these rocks intended for studio display combine the charm of microcosm with sheer abstract beauty; whether regarded as fantastical miniature landscapes or as nonrepresentational sculpture, they invite and reward contemplation. The book accompanies an exhibition organized by Robert D. Mowry, curator of Chinese art, Arthur M. Sackler Museum, Harvard University Art Museums. Essays provide rich insights into the rocks' history and social context, as well as their web of poetic, religious, and philosophical associations. Along with an abundance of research on Chinese records, the book offers ground-breaking scientific analyses in an effort to establish materials and provenance of the rocks, and of their accompanying stands, which are often regarded as minor works of art in their own right. Color plates of the eighty rocks in the exhibition are accompanied by full descriptions and extensive background materials. Maps, tables, graphs, and comparative figures further enhance this striking foundation study. With contributions by Eugene Farrell and C. German-French artist Wols (Wolfgang Schulze -- 1913-1915) rose to fame in the post- 1945 Euopean art scene as the founder of Informel (or 'gestural abstraction') painting. His photography has previously been presented as studies for his art. Here they are presented as seminal works on their own. The portraits, fashion photographs, still lifes are accompanied by an essay on various printings, bibliography and translation of The Photography of Wolfgang Schultz, a 1932 text by Dutch cultural critic, H. van Loon. Ellsworth Kelly first conceived Line Form Color in 1951 as a series of studies, both drawings and collages. Later that year he applied to the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation for a grant to produce a book, "an alphabet of plastic pictorial elements," but the application was not successful. With this volume, Kelly has brought Line Form Color to completion. Its forty plates correspond to the original collages. This slipcased edition also includes an essay by Harry Cooper, curator of modern art at the Harvard University Art Museums.

During his expatriate years in France (1948-54), Ellsworth Kelly developed the visual strategies that would make him one of the most important artists of our era. This is most evident in his French drawings, here presented thoroughly for the first time, together with a searching commentary by noted scholar Yve-Alain Bois. In drawing, Kelly evolved four strategies for making art: transfer, chance, modular grid, and monochrome panel. His goal was to develop an alternative to traditional composition at once radically inventive and stubbornly personal. This bi-lingual German/English catalog presents an intimate view of the process of artistic conception.

This beautiful book presents highlights from the collection of Maida and George Abrams, arguably the finest private collection of Dutch seventeenth-century drawings in the world. The works range from studies by renowned masters--including Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Rembrandt van Rijn, Jacob van Ruisdael, Jacques de Gheyn II, Hendrick Goltzius, and Hendrick Avercamp--to drawings by lesser-known draftsmen whose contributions are essential to understanding the art of the period. The book features seven drawings by Rembrandt, a diverse group by his pupils, a comprehensive survey of Dutch landscape drawing, and figure studies and scenes of daily life by genre artists such as Willem Buytewech and Adriaen van Ostade. The works are explicated in William Robinson's detailed catalogue entries and in two essays: George Abrams reflects on recent acquisitions for his collection; and Martin Royalton-Kisch examines the Abrams' holdings within the tradition of specialized collections of Dutch drawings in England, France, and America.
