Carl Hall, born in 1921 in Detroit, was an accomplished Magic Realist painter on the brink of a major career in American art when World War II intervened. As a young Army recruit, he was assigned to Camp Adair near Corvallis, Oregon, in 1942. For Hall, Oregon was "Eden Again," and after military service in the Pacific he and his wife settled permanently in the state, which became the focus of Hall's consummate artistry for the next 50 years. Hall became one of western Oregon's most expressive visual interpreters, focusing for most of his lifetime on the terrain of the Willamette Valley, the mountains that enclose it, and the Pacific coast beyond. In exploring Hall's place in Pacific Northwest and American art, this book is a study of regional art and art history, of the interplay between regional and national art production in the periods before and after World War II, and of Hall's metaphorical use of natural forms as the basis for personal expression.

Charles E. Heaney (1897-1981) was a highly regarded Oregon painter and printmaker who created a powerful body of work over a sixty-year period that is remarkable for its consistency, enormity, and complex emotional expressiveness. This volume examines his paintings, including his urban "demolition" series based on the razing of old buildings in Portland as the city modernized, his renderings of the remote landscape of eastern Oregon and Nevada, and his "portraits" of individuals, usually women, placed icon-like in the center of the picture. As a printmaker, he was recognized thorughout his lifetime for his woodcut prints of Portland neighborhoods, small Oregon towns, and the high desert of Eastern Oregon, and his aquatints based on plants, fish, and fossil forms.

David Roberts (1796–1864) was a self-taught Scottish painter who rose from the depths of poverty and obscurity in Edinburgh to become one of the most celebrated artists of his generation, a member of the Royal Academy, and a painter whose works can be found in some of the most distinguished public and private collections in Europe and America. A highly ambitious and motivated artist who loved to travel, he is best known for the travelogue of Egypt and the Holy Land that he produced with lithographer Louis Haghe from sketches he made during a nine-month trip to the region in 1838–39. These exquisitely rendered prints of the architecture and topography of the Middle East, as well as the prints of Moorish Spain that he made on a trip there a decade earlier, firmly established him as an important Orientalist painter and the most accomplished architectural and topographical painter of his day. Rita Robillard (American, born 1944) is a highly regarded Portland, Oregon, mixed media artist who explores themes of history, nature, ecology, and place in her work. A prolific printmaker and painter who is constantly pushing the boundaries of the printmaking medium, Robillard was born, raised, and educated in New York City, studied at Cooper Union in the early 1960s, lived and worked in Brazil in the early 1970s, earned her BA degree and MFA degree at the University of California, Berkeley in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and taught at Washington State University in Pullman and Portland State University. Wherever she has lived, Robillard's work has served as an exploration and meditation on time and place. &nbsp; In this lavishly illustrated book, four contemporary art writers come together to explore the life and times of Rita Robillard.
