History of the Clan Lundy, Lundie, Lundin: One of the Most Ancient Families of the Kingdom of Scotland: a History And Genealogy from the 11th Century to the Present Day

The history of many of the great houses and families of Scotland are well documented in literature, and by clan associations and individuals on the Internet. The family of Lundie (Lundy, Lundin, Lundyn) is described, by Sir Robert Douglas in his Baronage, as one of the most ancient in Scotland; its history however up until now is almost un-documented. Most lists of Scottish Clans and families seem to omit this family. The few books that do include details; with one notable exception, Lundins of Fife, by G. T. Welsh; provide very little information. In fact the short paper by Welsh is the only text so far printed that was solely dedicated to this family's history. This lack of documentation of the Lundie family is quite remarkable given, as shall be discussed in full later, the fact that members of this family have occupied many high offices in Scotland; including those of Lord High Treasurer, Chancellor, Chamberlain, Hereditary Doorward (personal body guard to the King), and Member of the Council of Regents of the Kingdom. They have performed duties as hosts, ambassadors and representatives of the Sovereign; voted for Wallace as Protector of Scotland, fighting by his side in Scotland's fight for Independence; and played an important role in the reformation of the church in Scotland. Indeed many of the heads of "Great" families of Scotland, have direct descent from this house through marriage with daughters of the various branches of the Lundie family. By taking what has been written by historians so far, it has really only been through reading the histories of these other families and noting their intermarriage with Lundies, that one could form an idea of their high social standing and historical importance.

This book is about the famous outbreak of witchcraft allegations and prosecutions associated with Christian Shaw, the so-called 'Bargarran Impostor' in Renfrewshire, Scotland in the 1690s. Much of the material it comprises was written then, in particular, the pivotal publication: A True Narrative of the Sufferings and Relief of a Young Girle; Strangely molested by Evil spirits and their instruments in the West: With a preface and postscript containing Reflections on what is most Material or Curious either in the history or trial of the Seven Witches who were Condemn'd to be Execute in the country There are similarities and links between this Renfrewshire case and the prior Salem case in New England in 1692. For instance, the sorts of fits that Christian Shaw and the other New England and Scottish alleged victims of witchcraft were said to have experienced are remarkably similar. Both cases involve children as alleged victims. Clergymen play important parts in both cases. The material presented here shows that the Salem case and the Renfrewshire one are better understood with reference to each other. The core of this book was first published as A History of the Witches of Renfrewshire in 1809 and again in 1877 with additional material. This 3rd edition of A History of the Witches of Renfrewshire reprints the 2nd edition and contains, as well as additional material about the Salem case and about the Renfrewshire case, a new, comprehensive introduction to witchcraft in New England and in Scotland. Therein, it is shown that although they are of great interest in their own rights, the Salem and Renfrewshire cases were not typical ones and that witch-hunting in New England and in Scotland was not as irrational, unjust, cruel and unfair as it is commonly thought to have been. Dr McLachlan is a Reader in the School of Law and Social Sciences, Glasgow Caledonian University. He is the author of Social Justice, Human Rights and Public Policy (Humming Earth, 2005) and joint author of A Source-book of Scottish Witchcraft (The Grimsay Press, 2005). He is an elder in the Church of Scotland and worships at Paisley Abbey.

Our modern world is dominated by oil. Many of the policies of national governments are based on the desire for its acquisition. Regimes have been overthrown in order to gain control of this valuable commodity. And it wasn't that much different one hundred years ago - oil was just as essential.  This is the story of the great shale oil industry which once flourished in the village of Broxburn, West Lothian, telling how Broxburn Oil Works extracted oil from the shale and created its many products. The volume of shale excavated from the mines by the Broxburn Oil Company and the fees paid both to Lord Cardross - the Earl of Buchan - and to local estates for transporting shale across their land is given in detail. Some personal background is added to those several individuals who appear otherwise to exist only as names associated with the early oil works, giving substance to these men. The book also charts the rise and fall of local oil companies, and lists the fatal accidents which occurred in the shale mines and in the Albyn and Broxburn oil works. Finally, it describes the sequence of events which led eventually - despite the continued importance of oil - to the closure of the shale mines and the demolition of Broxburn Oil Works.  As a former engineer who worked in the experimental department on the first Concorde aircraft, Peter Caldwell's personal encounter with the oil and petrochemicals industry came as a technical clerk with the engineering and construction company Foster Wheeler.  His family connection with the West Lothian shale industry is his grandfather, Peter Morton, who was brought up in an oil company house and went on to work for Young's Paraffin Light and Mineral Oil Company, and then later Scottish Oils, in the first half of the 20th century -  at Uphall, Hopetoun, and Broxburn.  As a boy, Peter Caldwell was fascinated by the tips, the great red shale bings which once dominated the local landscape. There were so many questions. When did it all start? Who was involved? How many shale mines? Where were they? And why did it all end?  The answers to these questions, and many more, are to be found in this book.

This account of William Kirkpatrick of Málaga reveals for the first time a remarkable man only occasionally mentioned in the numerous biographies of his famous granddaughter, the Empress Eugénie. As United States Consul in Malaga between 1800 and 1817, William Kirkpatrick was a strong advocate of the US Navy's role in combating the Barbary Corsairs. His Consular work, business enterprises and extensive European and American connections are explored using new sources. These show that the Kirkpatricks of Dumfriesshire who settled in Spain in the 1730s were an enterprising family of international merchants. Allied with similar families from across Europe, the Kirkpatricks revolutionised trade and industry in southern Spain and even had a hand in introducing grapevines to Australia. The Kirkpatrick family received wide attention when Eugénie, aided by her mother the formidable Maria Manuela, Countess de Montijo, made a spectacular marriage to Napoleon III and became Empress Regent of France, a confidante of Queen Victoria, and an iconic figure in 19th Century Europe. After a wide-ranging business career in Africa, Colin Carlin now lives in Bath where he is associated with a leading contemporary art gallery.

Richard Orr attended the High School of Glasgow, then read classics and law at Glasgow University, serving as assistant purser on the River Clyde during eight summer vacations.  His love of the River Clyde and its ships never left him, and he organised various educational charters in the later 1970s.  In retirement, he maintains his varied interests including ships, travel and hillwalking. He lives with his wife June in the home of his birth in the south side of Glasgow and has two grown up children.
