The island of Ireland has had more than the average share of troubles visited on it by outsiders. Despite, or perhaps because of, its location on the Atlantic coast of Europe, the English monarchy has taken a close but generally unsuccessful interest in its western neighbour. This book first looks at the attempt to plant Scots Protestants in Catholic Ulster, and the consequences for the island itself.  Then, perhaps more dramatically, it chronicles the effect of the arrival, on the shores of North America, of around 250,000 Ulster migrants. The balance of the population of the emergent colony was now tilted towards those disaffected migrants who had no loyalty to England, nor Scotland, nor the newly-formed United Kingdom. A Semblance of Scotland: Scottish Identity in Colonial Western Australia

Scots migrating to colonial Western Australia were part of a nineteenth century trend taking Scots to various corners of the world. By the mid-nineteenth century Scots were scattered across the globe, most noticeably in Canada, the United States, Australia and New Zealand, continuing a tradition existing since the seventeenth century. But while the large groups of Scottish migrants are well known, smaller groups of Scots such as existed in Western Australia are the least recognised in settler historiography.  Focussing on the lives of the first Scots arriving in the Swan River colony from 1829 to 1850, A Semblance of Scotland shows how not all Scots went out to areas with large groups of compatriots. Westralian Scots can be seen as an example of small migrant groups that, rather than be absorbed, can and do retain a strong sense of identity.  Leigh S. L. Straw tutors in History at the Conservatorium of Music and at the University of New South Wales. Leigh migrated to Western Australia from Kinross, Scotland in 1988 at the age of ten. Leigh has published articles on Scottish migration to WA, presented at various conferences and is a contributor to the forthcoming Historical Encyclopedia of Western Australia. This book is about the famous outbreak of witchcraft allegations and prosecutions associated with Christian Shaw, the so-called 'Bargarran Impostor' in Renfrewshire, Scotland in the 1690s. Much of the material it comprises was written then, in particular, the pivotal publication: A True Narrative of the Sufferings and Relief of a Young Girle; Strangely molested by Evil spirits and their instruments in the West: With a preface and postscript containing Reflections on what is most Material or Curious either in the history or trial of the Seven Witches who were Condemn'd to be Execute in the country There are similarities and links between this Renfrewshire case and the prior Salem case in New England in 1692. For instance, the sorts of fits that Christian Shaw and the other New England and Scottish alleged victims of witchcraft were said to have experienced are remarkably similar. Both cases involve children as alleged victims. Clergymen play important parts in both cases. The material presented here shows that the Salem case and the Renfrewshire one are better understood with reference to each other. The core of this book was first published as A History of the Witches of Renfrewshire in 1809 and again in 1877 with additional material. This 3rd edition of A History of the Witches of Renfrewshire reprints the 2nd edition and contains, as well as additional material about the Salem case and about the Renfrewshire case, a new, comprehensive introduction to witchcraft in New England and in Scotland. Therein, it is shown that although they are of great interest in their own rights, the Salem and Renfrewshire cases were not typical ones and that witch-hunting in New England and in Scotland was not as irrational, unjust, cruel and unfair as it is commonly thought to have been. Dr McLachlan is a Reader in the School of Law and Social Sciences, Glasgow Caledonian University. <p>In 1901, Thomas Mawson (1861-1933) first published 'The Art and Craft of Garden Making', now regarded as the foundation of modern landscape architecture. By 1926, it had been reprinted five times. It is this book which revealed Mawson's inspiration and gave a name to the style of work achieved by Edwin Lutyens &amp; Gertrude Jekyll. Thomas Mawson was a prolific &amp; influential designer who became the first president of the Institute of Landscape Architects (now Landscape Institute) in 1929. His design practice based in Windermere, in the English Lake District, prospered owing both to a wealthy clientele - brought to the area by the railway network - and to his obvious talent for design which blended architecture and horticulture. Thomas's prolific and successful career included commissions on Graythwaite Hall, Langdale Chase, Holehird, Brockhole, Holker Hall and at Rydal Hall in 1909. He also had a considerable number of projects abroad including in Canada, America and mainland Europe.</p>

<p>Gertrude Jekyll (1843-1932) was an artist, craftswoman, writer, and gardener; she is perhaps the most famous garden designers of her time.
