The texts in this volume provide evidence for Cyprus' ancient history . Indeed, the island was in the realm of 'prehistory' due to no written documents existing, except as clay tablets. Vasyl Hryhorovyc-Bars'kyj was an eighteenth century traveller who documented his journeys around Cyprus. His accounts are incredibly detailed and describe churches, monasteries and religious life on the island. He wrote as an insider, despite originating from Kiev; his primary interest being that of the Orthodox religious life that he found on the island.

For the first time, this volume establishes an accurate account of the travels and adventures of Pero Tafur, beginning in 1436. Tafur set out from his native Spain to voyage to Jerusalem. His journey lasted for three years, in which he stopped twice at Cyprus. Hence Tafur's accounts of his time in Cyprus provide reliable historical evidence of the island in the 15th century.

This volume collects the English texts written by visitors to Cyprus between the early 15th century up til 1878. In this period, the island was ruled by the Franks and the Turks. Also included are passages from Chaucer and Sir John Mandeville. All texts are extensive for what was actually written at the time, so nothing has been excluded from this volume concerning English representations. Towards the end of the period book-length texts appear focusing solely on Cyprus, so some texts have been excerpted.

Many visitors to the island in this period were military personnel or government servants. More women travellers came to Cyprus at this time and their experiences are represented as well.
