Clatilda Bailey becomes heir to her husband's ranch when he is slain by a raging bear. Unable to operate the ranch by herself, she hires Will Jackson, the itinerant cowboy who witnessed the mauling of her husband, and killed the bear, although not soon enough. Almost involuntarily, Will and Clatilda's lives become entwined as Will assumes increasing control of, and responsibility for, the ranch. Their life in the San Luis Valley of Colorado is much as might be expected in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Will's life is further complicated by Clatilda's membership in the Mormon community surrounding the ranch. His growing affection for Clatilda is made more difficult by the necessity to protect her and the ranch in ways not totally in keeping with the beliefs of neighboring Mormon families. These problems, coupled with his struggles to understand Clatilda's character, make his growth, in the acceptance of the Mormon ways, difficult and sporadic. Finally, Will and Clatilda reconcile their beliefs and the result is the changing of this Panhandle cowboy into a person that Will, himself, finds amazing.

Will Jackson, former itinerant Panhandle cowboy tries to accustom himself to an easier life than he had ever known. During these times, some very good and some not so good, he and his wife, Clatilda, go through the trials of a family ranching in a rural Mormon community in the latter years of the nineteenth century. Will and Clatilda seem to hav even more than their share of tribulation as they struggle to keep their extended family together, and to protect their ranch and cattle. The death of children, friends and family members is somewhat softened by new arrivals, by both birth and migration. During all of this, Will finds himself questioning his contributions to life, and wondering if he will leave any memory of himself beyond his children's lives. Clatilda feels he is sufficiently secure in the community to satisfy his need for remembrance, but supports Will in his attempts to better himself. Will's chosen method of creating his niche in history is not as might be expected of an unschooled cowboy. His success is sufficient to satisfy even one much better stationed in life.

Perhaps in the future a patient may be able to swallow a simple pill and grow his or her own new organs, bones, muscles, etc. Regardless, Gardenia Sunrise gives a message of hope and resilience that may be able to mend even Brandje's broken heart.
