This love lasts to eternity with the couple growing closer and closer. It is above every other love that humans can enjoy. But it is said to be very rare at this day. It is attained progressively as the couple approaches the Lord in the life of religion. When attained, the couple will experience inner peace, innocence, tranquility, full trust, inmost friendship and a deep desire for union on all levels of human life. Both the ideal, with practical ways to work for it, and the perversions people can enter into that destroy it, are discussed. The book, since its publication in 1768, has been both controversial due to the subject matter covered, and also inspiring. Its influence has been far reaching, running as a subtle current throughout nineteenth century literature to the present. Its pages give hope for our world where marriage between husband and wife is challenged, showing how each partner can make a different but important contribution to their union. Conjugial Love: Delights of Wisdom Relating to Conjugal Love Followed by Pleasures of Insanity Relating to Licentious Love

In this translation, Bruce Rogers substitutes the term "Married Love" for Swedenborg's self-coined "Conjugial Love." Other than the substitution of terms, this edition is identical to the Rogers translation of Conjugial Love. The full title of this unusual work is The Delights of Wisdom Pertaining to Conjugial Love after Which Follow the Pleasures of Insanity Pertaining to Scortatory Love. The book treats of marriage and sex-morality and also of various perversions of marriage. Swedenborg asserts that true Conjugial love descends from the Lord into all humans. The male and female receive and apply this love differently, the two receptions complementing each other. In a proper marriage husband and wife together learn the fullness of love through looking to the Lord and shunning selfishness. The delights of marriage are presented as the height of human delight These delights include raising children by which means the race is continued and heaven peopled. Conjugial Love is a high-minded work, but not an abstruse one. Many practical matters of the relationship between the sexes such as courtship, betrothal, jealousy, temptation, disaffection, sensuality, prudence, and courtesy are dealt with. This is a book of guidelines for spiritual living with much rational appeal. Eternal ideas are advocated as the only proper starting point for a happy marriage life, although problems posed by the power of the sensual are not ignored. The family, as the basic unit of society, receives stress in Conjugial Love.

After one has read from the pages of this 20-year journal of a respected scientist and statesman in which he recorded his spiritual experiences of seeing and speaking with those who have passed on to the other world, how could one doubt that there is a life after death? These almost daily otherworldly experiences began in 1745 when God, the Lord Himself, opened Swedenborg's spiritual senses so that he might communicate with those in the spiritual world and thus serve as a human instrument of a new Divine revelation to mankind. Regarding this Swedenborg wrote on August 23, 1748: "All the things that I have written in this book have not been written in any other way than from actual experience, from conversation with spirits and angels, from thought as tacit speech, then, when I was writing, from things imparted by those who for the most part were together with me at the time while they were being experienced, and from their guidance of my thoughts, of the things written, of my hand. So everything written in these three books and elsewhere, though here and there disconnected, are nevertheless experiences, and everything in its own way came from spirits, or angels-this likewise having been guided by spirits next to my head. For I have in every case perceived their presence." Swedenborg's experiences are rationally convincing evidence that the other world, the life after death that awaits us all, is very, very real. Swedenborg tells of meeting well-known acquaintances of his who had passed on-not a few of whom were amazed that they are still fully alive and fully human although they had left this earthly world! And he describes what living conditions are like in heaven and hell, and relates incidents which lucidly illustrate the consequences of faithless, evil behavior, such as adultery, and the peaceful happiness that follows a sincere pursuit of heavenly goodness.

Swedenborg's discussion of Divine Love and Divine Wisdom is divided into five parts. Part one begins with a simple but profound statement concerning the nature of love: "Love is a person's life." Since God is life itself it follows that all love is from him. God is the source of all creation. Nothing can come from nothing. Part two goes on ton outline how two worlds were created in such a way that they "correspond" to one another. For example, love on the level of the spiritual world corresponds to heat on the level of the natural world. Wisdom in turn corresponds to light. All things of the spirit have the corresponding counterpart in nature. Part three describes "degrees" of two types. "Continuous" degrees are like the degrees of heat measured by a thermometer and "discreet" degrees are like the rungs of a ladder. These degrees have no relationship to one another except by correspondence. Part four shows how the physical form of a person corresponds to the Divine Form from which creation took place. Part five concludes the work with a discussion of human creation. This edition is bound in red, with gold lettering.
