In 1956, Miró moved into a splendid new studio which the architect Josep Lluís Sert had designed for him in Palma (Mallorca). From that time, his art underwent considerable changes. At first, he stopped painting altogether. He worked hard to finish the ceramic murals for the Unesco building in Paris, which were unveiled in 1958. He also had to organize things in his studio. He spent a lot of time reviewing his earlier work, mainly the preparatory drawings accumulated over the years. He tore up quite a number of them, and others he used as the starting point for new projects. With more space at his disposal, he was able to return to the large formats that he had found so satisfying when working on his murals (both ceramic and painted) and his plan now was to embark on large-format canvases.

The work of the Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson (born in Copenhagen, 1967) focuses on sensorial perception, the laws of physics and natural phenomena. He works in a variety of media, but is particularly known for his sculptural installations for specific places. His use of light, water, ice and clouds in these spaces is a reflection of his Icelandic roots,and the complexity and diversity of his work have made him a point of reference in the current international art scene. Olafur Eliasson was awarded the Joan Miro Prize in 2007 for his status as one of the leading artists of our times. His work has been shown in major museums around the world. "Light Lab" was at the Portikus centre in Frankfurt and "Take your Time:Olafur Eliasson," a retrospective for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art that was later exhibited in the MoMA in New York.

The Joan Miro Foundation presents "Her Memory", an exhibition by Kiki Smith organised in collaboration with the Museum Haus Esters in Krefeld and the Kunsthalle Nurnberg, containing recent work by this US artist. It could in fact be called an exhibition in progress, since it has been amplified in each venue anterior to the exhibition presented in the Foundation, which is the last location of this tour. Kiki Smith was born in Nurnberg in 1954 to an artistic family: her mother an opera singer and her father Minimalist artist Tony Smith. Her work is characterised by a constant reflection on human existence and on life and death; and her drawings of the human body, which are both traumatic and poetic. She reached international recognition at the end of the 1980s. In 2006-2007, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and the Whitney Museum in New York organised a touring retrospective exhibition, "Kiki Smith: A Gathering, 1980-2005", which signalled the end of a period.

The title, Let Us Face the Future, comes from the Labour Party's slogan for their 1945 electoral campaign, which culminated in the unexpected defeat of the Conservatives led by Winston Churchill. The incoming Labour government established the welfare state in the UK, bringing about changes in British society which eventually led to the explosion of creativity and freedom of 1960s London; David Hockney's daring exploration of his sexuality, the sculptural revolution led by Anthony Caro, and the optical paintings of Bridget Riley. Other influential artists included in the exhibition are Eduardo Paolozzi, a Scot of Italian origin who with Bunk, a series of collages started in 1952, anticipated what would come to be Pop Art, and Richard Hamilton, creator of the 1956 collage Just what is it that makes today's homes so different, so appealing, which is considered to be the first work of the British Pop movement.
