Victor Hugo's romantic melodrama Ruy Blas was first performed in 1838 for the opening of the Theatre de la Renaissance.  There was a revival at the Odeon with Sarah Bernhardt in 1872, and at the Theatre-Francais in 1879.   Victor Hugo (1802-1885) was a novelist, poet, and dramatist, and the most important of French Romantic writers.  In his preface to his historical play Cromwell (1827) Hugo wrote that romanticism is the liberalism of literature.  Hugo developed his own version of the historical novel, combining concrete, historical details with vivid, melodramatic, even feverish imagination.  Among his best-known works are The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Misérables.   Victor Hugo was one of the greatest personalities of French literature.  Though not without the faults and eccentricities which frequently characterize great geniuses, he never entered any field of literature without excelling in it.  The novel, the lyric, the drama, criticism, all fell from his facile pen without apparent effort.

Richard Harding Davis (1864-1916) was an American writer and journalist, born in Philadelphia, and educated at Lehigh and Johns Hopkins universities. When barely out of his teens, Davis was already turning out society columns, special reports, and short stories for Charles Scribner and William Randolph Hearst. He began as a reporter in Philadelphia. In 1890 he was managing editor of Harper's Weekly. He served as war correspondent for the London Times and the New York Herald during the Greco-Turkish (1897), Spanish-American (1898), South African (1899-1902) and Russo-Japanese (1904-5) wars; and he represented the New York Tribune in Mexico in 1914. During World War I he was correspondent with the French and British armies in Serbia. Among his most popular writings are Gallegher and Other Stories (1891), Soldiers of Fortune (1897), The Bar Sinister (1903), The Man Who Could Not Lose (1911); the plays Ranson's Folly (1904), The Dictator (1904), and Miss Civilization (1906); and many travel books. Davis was easily the first reporter of his time - perhaps of all time. Out of any incident or situation he could pick the most details that would interest the most people and put them in a way that was pleasing to the most people; and always, it seemed he had the extraordinary good judgment or the extraordinary good luck to be just where the most interesting thing was taking place. He posed for the male counterpart of the Gibson girl, and introduced the avocado to American dining tables. He counted Stanford White, Charles Dana Gibson, Ethel Barrymore, and Stephen Crane among his somewhat raffish circle of friends and associates.

The infamous account of a European lady's life in a harem, an erotic novel set among the Harems of the Middle East and first published in1828.  The title page of the 1828 edition previewed it as: "A history founded on facts, containing an interesting narrative of the cruel fate of the two young English ladies, named Silvia Carey and Emily Barlow.  Fully explaining how Emily Barlow, and her servant, Eliza Gibbs, on their passage to India, were taken prisoner by an Algerine pirate, and made a present of to the Dey of Algiers; who, on the very night of their arrival debauched Emily.  Containing also, every particular of the artful plans laid by the Dey, to get possession of the person of Silvia Carey - how he effected his purpose - with the particulars of her becoming a victim to his libidinous desires.  Which recital is also interspersed with the histories of several other ladies confined in the Dey's Harem.  One of which gives an account of the horrid practices then carrying on in several French and Italian convents by a society of monks, established at Algiers, under pretense of redeeming Christian skaves; but who, in reality, carried on an infamous traffic in young girls.  Also an account of the sufferings of Eliza Gibbs, from the flogging propensities of the Bey of Tunis.  With many other curious circumstances, until the reduction of Algiers by Lord Exmouth; by which means these particulars became known."
