Maravilla is the first urban novel about Latino youth's experinece in the streets of a major metropolitan area. This is also the earliest novel ever written about an urban Latina finding her way in the mean streets of L.A. This is a novel written about Latino youth living in the barrio. It depicts their experience in the housing projects of  L.A. The Maravilla project was a well known public housing in East  Los Angeles during the mid-fifties where poverty, crime and desperation often ran unmitigated. This novel for the first time depicts the  Chicano youth--long before they ever were known as such--in the L.A. barrios.  "I named you Consuelo," my mother said, "because you didn't stop screaming for hours when you were born. I figured you needed hope."   To Consuelo Concepción, "Cece" Contreres, however, hope seems to be just about all she's got. So when her boyfriend is cheating on her, her friends are doing drugs, and her parents don't understand her, is it any wonder that the only person she can talk to is St. Teresa de Avila?   From the housing projects of East Los Angeles, Maravilla, to the lively scene of San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district in the 1960s, Laura del Fuego's novel tells the absorbing and personal tale of a young Chicana, like many in real life, making her way in turbulent times. It is a thoughtful and sometimes violent story about coming of age in the heart of the barrio, discovering one's self in the midst of chaos and trying to make sense of a troubled life. An outstanding young writer, del Fuego knits a complex weave whereby her heroine progresses through the barrios of East Los Angeles during the effervescent years of the 1960's. Unlike, García Márquez' narrative that centers on political turmoil and violence, Del Fuego's bring us the asphalt jungle, violence in the inner city barrio, which equally unsettle and destroy the Latino pathos. This new height of writing style and drama is a welcome addition to the selected group of Hispanic women writers. Most highly recommended.

Latina Healers: Lives of Power and Tradition

Hayman situates Modotti (1896-1942) profoundly within her social period from her 1913 emigration from Udine, Italy, to San Francisco to a full-fledged member of the intellectual wing of the Mexican Communist Party. She became the lover of Cuban revolutionary Julio Antonio Mella and when he was murdered, Modotti became the main suspect. When the Mexican president was assassinated, she was accused and deported. She returned to Mexico many years later and lived alone in a small cottage until her mysterious death in a taxi at age 46. Octavio Paz claimed that Modotti belonged "more to the history of passions than to the history of ideologies," Hayman propounds that Modotti lived a full life of her own choice, and that politics, ideology, and history were never paramount to her own personal life-an indescribable story of fame, style, gossip and turmoil. She wrote her own biography like a liberated woman of the 1960s, far ahead of any one of her contemporaries. In the end she was a visionary, a trend setter, a model of womanhood, which would be emulated many decades later.

Tina Modotti's Mexico: A Tale Of Love & Revolution

Mexican American, Latino, Hispanic and Chicano folk literature has been of interest to folklorists and been collected incidentally, mostly as part of compilations of the longer and more prestigious standard folktale. José Reyna began his collection of jokes 1969, and some of the jokes compiled then, appeared in Stanley L. Robe's Antología del Saber Popular [1971]. Picardía Chicana, the result of thirty years of work, contains five hundred twenty-six jokes which are reproduced here verbatim from tape recordings collected in the field. Some jokes were collected by the author as field research projects at Texas A & M University-Kingsville [1972-77] and at the University of New Mexico [1977-1984]. Others are synopses of jokes that Dr. Reyna learned over the years and took the liberty of translating to English for presentation here. This book represents the best Mexican American joke tradition. The title Picardía Chicana was selected in keeping with a well-known sixteenth-century Hispanic tradition of El Lazarillo de Tormes published originally in 1554, which spawned a new literary genre-la novela picaresca. Both the pícaro and the novela picaresca would surface in the New World--in Mexico--in the early nineteenth century (José Joaquín Fernández de Lizardi, El Periquillo Sarniento). The term picardía would describe the biting wit and humor of twentieth century Mexicans, such as Armando Jiménez, Picardía Mexicana, or that of Mexico's greatest philosopher, Octavio Paz, who would philosophize about picardía (Jiménez, Nueva Picardía). Here picardía is used to describe the humor of Anglicized Spanish-English bilingual Mexican Americans in the United States of America, neither of whom even existed when the word pícaro was born. But, given their status as abused orphans, and their propensity for linguistic wit and humor, it may well be that picardía-living by their [linguistic] wit-is what best defines the Mexican American culture.
