<p>Presbyterians in New York City organized as a church in 1716. The congregation moved from its Wall Street site to its present location on Fifth Avenue between 11th and 12th Streets, in 1846. In the course of its history the membership has included many who influenced the life of the city, the nation and the American Presbyterian tradition. Dorothy Ganfield Fowler, a Presbyterian ruling elder, has supplied her high competence and professional skill as a scholar for this needed study of one of the oldest Christian congregations in the nation's largest city. Drawing on the records and materials preserved in its archives, she portrays the conflicts and changes that mark its life during the last three centuries. Often those changes and conflicts were microcosmic versions of what other Presbyterians and other denominations were also experiencing in relation to changes in the mind and patterns of American society.</p>
