The rapid growth of the aluminium (or aluminum) industry during the last hundred years reflects the status of aluminium as the quintessentially modern metal. Given its impact on every facet of modern life, its aptitude for academic analysis is only rivaled by the versatility of the metal in industrial application. In the 19th century, aluminium was the source of luxury goods for the rich few, but during World War I, it was subjected to strategic considerations by belligerent states, becoming a warfare metal. It remained a military-strategic metal well into the 1950s before it regained a position as a metal for civilian consumption, this time for the masses. From Warfare to Welfare takes a historical approach, informed by an institutionalist perspective, to elucidate the political economy of the aluminium industry in the 20th century. The book is structured as a series of analyses of the interactions between the state and the corporations in different countries. By looking at business-government relationships, the book provides a better grasp on the linkages between the aluminium industry and the two key features of the history of the 20th century: the rise of the industrial warfare state and its subsequent replacement by the welfare state. From the reign of King Magnus Hakonsson (1263-1280) until the Reformation (1537), the province of the Nidaros Church and the realm of the King of Norway coincided, more or less. This was hardly a coincidence. It might have been foreseen already at the construction of the metropolitan see of Nidaros (Trondheim) in 1152 (or 1153). In the early 1260s, when Icelanders and Greenlanders accepted the King of Norway as their lord, they had been under ecclesiastical rule from Trondheim for more than 100 years. There is reason, therefore, to take a look at the role of the Nidaros Church in the making of Norwegian domination in the Norse world and in northern Scandinavia in the Middle Ages. There has been no previous systematic research on the relationship between Church and Crown in the making of a greater Norway in the Middle Ages, therefore this book contributes to opening up this rich field of research, touching upon some central issues. Since 1970, 0.7% of gross national income (GNI) as the norm for Official Development Assistance has been universally accepted by the United Nations and the rich donor nations of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. This book is a comparative and historical analysis of the degree to which aid transfers have conformed to the UN aid norms. Through detailed national studies based on archival materials, as well as current debates in the press and in parliaments, the book discusses why only a small number of countries have lived up to the norm; in other words, why some countries have been striving for the "Glory of the Saint," while most have continued to sin. The book's contributions provide a nuanced view of the nexus between international norms and pressures, domestic welfare, and political systems and donor behavior, and on whether states give aid for reasons of altruism or realpolitik. As the studies show, aid giving was generally moved by both concerns, but often in very complex ways. One key interpretation is that national foreign policy legacies, orientations, and priorities constitute the crucial focal point for understanding how domestic and international impulses have influenced and shaped levels of aid giving.

This book examines the role of legislation in the transformation of the early medieval Nordic realms into monarchic states in the High Middle Ages. The principal focus is on the development of a common law for Norway, the Norse lands overseas, and the northern and eastern peripheries of the king's mainland realm. While state formation was, in many respects, a parallel process in the Scandinavian kingdoms, there were interesting differences among them with regard to their chronology and character. In the mid-1100s, several decades earlier than their counterparts in Denmark, the kings of Norway were already active in the codification of provincial laws. Sweden was comparatively late in codifying provincial laws, a delay which mirrors the slow state formation process in eastern Scandinavia. On the other hand, Norway and Sweden were the only realms to develop comprehensive law codes for the whole of their respective realms: Magnus Hakonsson's Norwegian Landslov (1274) and Magnus Eriksson's Swedish Landslag (1350). In 1300, the realm of the King of Norway, including the mainland as well as overseas tributary lands, was a united community of law. (Series: Rostra Books - Trondheim Studies in History.
