The third reader begins with lessons on articulation and marks and pauses (punctuation). The articulation lesson reviews some of the words from the last half of the second reader, while the punctuation instruction provides a brief overview of the basic punctuation marks and their uses. Each of these lessons includes a note to the teacher and the articulation lesson includes a model for class drill. These introductory lessons are followed by 86 language arts lessons, each based upon character-building stories, essays, and poetry. Each paragraph or stanza is numbered, which makes it easy to assign portions of a passage or poem as copywork, recitation, or narration. Additional short lessons and teacher notes are found throughout the text. In this reader, students will find spelling words listed at the beginning of each lesson. The first spelling and vocabulary lesson in the third reader contains words from the story that follows, including learn, richly, culling, harvest, cause, wintry, engage, livelong, youth, summer, leaving, and brightest. Practice Spelling with McGuffey Readers provides an overview of how to use these spelling words. Most stories and nonfiction pieces are followed by a few questions about the text. In her review of the 1857 Readers, Cathy Duffy writes about a question in the third reader, "The first instruction, to relate the story, is essentially asking the child for an oral narration. The following two questions require students to think beyond the content of the story for their answers. This guided discussion stretches beyond narration but still fits the spirit of Charlotte Mason’s ideas." You may choose whether or not to use the provided questions. I would not use any that were simply questions of fact, but would instead substitute narration or a simple conversation about the story or poem. "This volume, the fourth in the remodeled series of the Eclectic Readers, contains a large amount of primary matter, much of which is new. "Articulation and Pronunciation are treated of systematically and thoroughly in the introductory pages, and exercises for practice, numerous and varied, will be found interspersed between the lessons. "Exercises in Spelling and Defining are placed at the head of the lessons, and are intended not only as valuable practice and information for the pupil, but also as specimens of the manner in which the lessons should be studied and recited. The teacher should add to the list all important words. "Lessons on Marks and Pauses, and on Inflection and Accent, are contained in this volume. The questions in this, as in the other volumes of the series, are intended to suggest rather than prescribe the method of examination. They can be varied at the teacher’s pleasure. "The Reading Lessons are drawn from a great variety of sources. Many are translations. They have been extensively remodeled, and some of them re-written. The names of the authors, from whom they are derived, are therefore omitted, they not being responsible for them in their present form. "The present edition is considerably enlarged, the additional selections being all new, and several of them relating to recent historical events, of enduring interest to all Americans." Reading level The easiest selections from this reader tested at Flesch-Kincaid grade level 4.8 with selections toward the end reaching grade level 8.9 in a readability scorer. The elephant story referenced above measured at a 10.1 grade level. Reading level rises fairly quickly, so remember to proceed at a comfortable pace. There is a lot to learn in each book!

You may use Charlotte Mason’s language arts methods of recitation, dictation, and narration with the lessons in the sixth reader. Instructions for each of these methods is found in the new 18-page introduction that has been added to this edition. Mason’s methods blend nicely with McGuffey’s reading selections and extensive instruction on elocution, and provide a logical way to use the readers. Features of the sixth reader In the preface, the original publisher of the 1857 edition outlines the scope of the sixth reader, designed for advanced pupils: "The Principles of Elocution, in the introductory article, arc explained and illustrated in a more extended, systematic, and complete form, than in the preceding volumes. "The Reading Exercises, as far as to page 204, are especially adapted to illustrate the principles explained in the introductory treatise. For example, the first five lessons are selected for their especial adaptation to practice in Articulation, although it must be borne in mind, that every word in every lesson is an exercise in articulation.
