The "New Ford" was introduced in December of 1927. With a rare eye for design, the very appearance of the car suggested character. It implied integrity and promised performance. Incorporating a radically different sliding gear transmission. shock absorbers, twice the horsepower of the earlier Model T, and only a slightly increased price, loyal Ford owners without hesitation "laid it on the line" and acquired a new Ford. 
 Hours after driving the car for the first time, most were convinced that here at last was an automobile that not only "belonged", but which actually led the way into the future. No longer the butt of comics' humor, the new Ford had joined the country club set and in the words of a song written by Walter O'Keefe and shortly to become immensely popular......

On February 10, 1942, a 1942 Super Deluxe Fordor sedan was rolled off of the end of the assembly line at the Ford Motor Company factory in Dearborn. It signified the conversion of the plant's effort to a military support mission. For the following four years, Ford was to devote its activities exclusively to the manufacture of trucks, planes, personnel carriers, and Jeeps (originally designed by Willys but second-sourced by Ford) and other military vehicles. Four years later, on May 9th, 1945, V-E Day was proclaimed and as the end to military conflict was in sight (our Pacific War with Japan was not yet concluded) Detroit commenced its re-tooling for the manufacture of automobiles. 
 On July 4, 1945, Ford published a picture of the "new model" tudor Ford with Henry Ford II behind the wheel. Obviously though, it was hardly a new model and existed only as a re-worked prewar 1942 model. It was followed in 1946 with more and an only slightly revised appearance change for 1947 and 1948, The emphasis at that time was on production in an effort to supply the pent up demand at the conclusion of the war. 
 Late in 1948, Ford previewed a straight-sided car, minimizing the fenders as such, and with the beginnings of a new "modern" look. After that, styling changes evolved each year and made drastic revisions at every third year. D design was refined as the basic car was enlarged. Engines became more powerful, and optional power accessories were offered to ease control of these new behemoths of the road. An ever-growing spiral had begun culminating in the 118" wheelbase Galaxy of 1959, sculptured giants far removed from the early post-war Fords.

In 1964, one automobile Manufacturer broke through the ho-hum barriers of conservative design and produced an entirely new model intended to satisfy the interests of several segments of the Market. The car, with its lengthened and extended hood, foreshortened rear deck, sculptured body panels and sporty bucket seats succeeded in providing a family-size sedan for the supermarket crowd, a "youthful abandon" appearance for those whose memories dealt with the earlier two-passenger Thunderbird, abundant power and control options for the soon-to-be-called "macho" segment, and a platform on which the speed-oriented could bolt readily available added power and handling accessories with which to convert it to an all-out sports car racing machine. 
 That manufacturer was the Ford Motor Company and the car was MUSTANG! That Ford's project was right on target is attested to by the fact that the car found over 100,000 buyers in its first four months, a half million more in the next twelve, and it reached a total of well-over one million cars in fewer than twenty-four months! Mustang's initial sales set an unequalled record that has yet to be eclipsed. 
 Its very success resulted in the production of similar cars (its name even provided their description, "pony cars"} by other manufacturers, and the competitive race was on. the result was to be a departure from the original concepts and by 1973 Mustang had grown some 12 inches in length and almost 20% in weight`. No longer "the car that was designed by you", it yet remained the choice of loyalists but offered those who preferred something "different" little reason to justify its selection. Thus, Ford Motor Company, in an unusual reaction achieved another notable success when it introduced the more compact 1974 model marking the very first time the industry had down-sized a successful line of its cars. 
 The factors that made the original Mustang the outstanding popular choice that it became in the 1960's remain effective today. Less than a dozen years later they inspired Collectors to seek out the more desirable models. The price of early Convertibles and slant-backs rose sharply until today when virtually all of the early Mustangs have joined the ranks of those outstanding Collectible automobiles of earlier years.

Mustang Does It!: An Illustrated History

During the 1950's, American cars were caught up with competitive growth in size. As each successive model appeared, it resembled the previous ones, but never was shorter or lighter. Perception of the American public was trained in the "bigger is better" school and this perception was reinforced by the domestic manufacturers like Ford, typical of the Industry, who saw its full-size car grow over 18 inches in length to a hefty 17.8 feet overall. 
 Imported cars were generally smaller, the VW was shorter by almost five feet, and lacked traditional "comforts", but a significant portion of Detroit's market was becoming receptive to the smaller,. lighter, more economical imports. import market had climbed to almost 7% of the domestic total and was growing rapidly. 
 Ford was certainly not alone in perceiving the emerging market, but Ford was the first of the three major manufacturers to bring to the market a car designed specifically to fill new requirements for a smaller. lighter. more fuel-efficient, more comfortable, and more crisply styled car. So new was this entrant that it was described simply as the "New-Size" car. 
Introduced on October 8. 1959, the Falcon was offered as transportation. Unlike the Mustang which was later derived from it, Falcon was offered with a very narrow choice of Options. Intended as inexpensive transportation, it claimed "up to 30 miles per gallon on regular gas". It offered room for six passengers (against only 4 for most imports) and was the result of a three year three=million mile development and test program. 
 In the 12 months following its introduction over a half a million were produced and by the end of its second model year almost one million Falcons had been manufactured, a record that would be exceeded only by the derivative Mustang in the mid-sixties. Falcon had certainly met its intended mark!
