Fabric is to Roberta Furlanetto what oil and canvas are to painters. In fact, she might well take a canvas, fray it and weave it into other textiles with threads and precious stones. Furlanetto constructs by hand creations that can't quite be called fashion, and yet fashion houses from Christian Lacroix to Dior to Ungaro have incorporated her works into their clothes. Combining embroidery, gold, wool, lace, solvents and sometimes ceramic glazes, her patterns burst with color. Some are meant to be hung on walls, some on models. This vivid book shows Furlanetto's inventions both on their own and as part of the clothing collections of various designers, particularly Lacroix. As Paola Nicolin writes in the text, “the basic grammar of her work speaks the language of art: violated materials, collage, tears and inlay, chromatic contrasts, brushstrokes and spatters.”

El Lissitzky for kids? Ellsworth Kelly? Surprisingly, both artists have designed and created artistss books for small children--or children at heart. This anthology of children's artists' books from the ÓPLA Archive (Oasis for Art Books) in Merano, Italy, is designed like a children's book itself--small in scale, paperback, with strong tear-proof paper. Inside, one finds detailed reproductions of rarely seen books by Keith Haring, John Armleder, Andy Warhol and Bruno Munari, among many others. One particular standout is an exquisite little book by Japanese artist Katsumi Komagata, a colorful, abstract pop-out book with an origami-like design. A special section features color reproductions of artworks and installations by artists such as Joan Miró, Michelangelo Pistoletto and Alighero Boetti.

Children's Corner: Artists' Books for Children

Edizioni Corraini's Bruno Munari Workshop series focuses on a variety of creative tasks and skills that inspire the active involvement of adults and children alike--flower arranging, in this case. In A Flower with Love, the beloved Italian artist and designer lets us in on the secret: "...what really matters is the love with which a little daisy, a lavender sprig or some moss are chosen, that one there in particular and not that other one." With full-color images of Munari's whimsical and inventive creations in each spread, we learn that flower arranging is not an obscure art but a natural gesture requiring more care and imagination than money. Munari's examples are not to be copied slavishly; they represent examples to aid the reader in uncovering their own natural aesthetic sensibilities.

In 1979 the fanciful Italian artist and designer Bruno Munari donated part of his personal archive to the Center for the Study of Archives and Communication in Parma--a sort of encyclopedic collection of solutions for possible answers. From early drawings for his abstract paintings of the 1930s, to the Negative-Positive works, to graphic sketches for publishing projects, to original editions of his games, this volume collects projects from across Munari's career, many of them previously unpublished. From the Bauhaus to Piaget's psychological theories, Munari assimilated many visual and conceptual trends of the twentieth century, reproposing them in new, highly creative and playful ways. Throughout his illustrious career in product design and architecture, Ettore Sottsass (1917-2007) maintained a close relationship with printed matter, designing, authoring, illustrating and editing a great many avant-garde literary and design/architectural books and periodicals from 1947 right up until the year before his death. Books by Ettore Sottsass organizes this vast body of work into eight phases: the 1962 Beat magazine Room East 128.Chronicle; books by poets Gregory Corso, Michael McClure, Philip Whalen and Sottsass himself, published under the Editions East 128 imprint; the psychedelic magazine Pianeta Fresco, which printed Beats alongside emerging comic artists; work for architecture and design magazines; Sottsass' own theoretical writings; catalogues produced for the Memphis Group; the magazine Terrazzo (1988-1995), which synthesized Sottsass' love of design, literature and architecture; and publications for his own Studio Sottsass Associati.

Wayne Thiebaud (born 1920) is to cakes and pastries what Cézanne is to apples: his renderings of sugary treats are more mouthwatering than the treats themselves, so creamily and lusciously depicted are they. Despite friendships with Johns and Rauschenberg, Thiebaud was never personally affiliated with a particular movement, though his pop-culture subject matter has tended to ally him with Pop. In fact, Thiebaud is simply a painter of Californian still lifes, as this volume underlines in relating him to the Italian still-life painter Giorgio Morandi. Conceived as a parallel journey through the works of the two artists, this volume reveals the close affinities that underlie their work: everyday subject matter simplified to pure formality, neatness of arrangement, repetition and variation and strong brushwork. It includes a piece on Morandi written by Thiebaud that first appeared in The New York Times in 1981, plus an interview by Alessia Masi.
