Authored by Robin Kinross, this volume offers a tour through the history of Western typography, from the time when it can be said to have become modern to the present moment. It highlights different cultures in different times, tracing the developments and shifts in modern typography while giving attention to ideas, social contexts, and techniques, thereby also bypassing the tired tropes of stylistic analysis. Included are concise accounts of modernist typography in Central Europe between the wars, and in Switzerland in the 1950s and 60s. Traditional typography in the United States, Great Britain, Germany, and the Low Countries is also discussed sympathetically.

Featuring texts that illuminate the oeuvre of Wim Crouwel, this abundantly-illustrated book analyzes his wide range of production in diverse fields, such as visual identities, publications, posters, exhibitions, and his catalogue work for the Stedelijk Museum of modern art in Amsterdam. For decades, Crouwel's influence has extended beyond the Netherlands, with his approach to graphic design that combines modernist heritage with pop fantasy. Au cours de sa carrière, il a réalisé à la fois des travaux de création typographique, des identités visuelles, de la signalétique, des affiches, des travaux d’édition, ou encore la scénographie d’expositions. À travers son travail de designer graphique, il a tenté d’explorer les ressources inépuisables offertes par le système de grille, en appliquant notamment ce principe à ses diverses compositions typographiques. Concevant l’écrit comme un élément plastique à part entière, il est l’auteur de nombreux caractères typographiques expérimentaux, dont le New Alphabet conçu en 1967. En parallèle de sa carrière de designer graphique, Wim Crouwel a également enseigné dans plusieurs écoles d’art, donc celles de Bois-le-Duc et d’Amsterdam, puis à l’université technique de Delft, au Royal College of Art à Londres, et enfin à l’université Erasmus de Rotterdam. Il a également été directeur du Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum de Rotterdam entre 1985 et 1993. Catherine de Smet est historienne de l’art et enseignante-chercheuse à l’université de Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint-Denis. Les relations entre graphisme et architecture occupent une part de ses travaux, dont rendent compte notamment Le Corbusier. Architect of Books (2005) et Vers une architecture du livre. Le Corbusier : édition et mise en pages, 1912-1965 (2007), parus chez Lars Müller Publishers. Son livre Pour une Critique du design graphique (B42, 2020), réunit dix-huit de ses essais consacrés à la création graphique des XXe et XXIe siècles, domaine de recherche auquel sont également dédiés plusieurs ouvrages qu’elle a codirigés. Depuis quelques années elle porte aussi son attention sur l’histoire des expositions, champ dans lequel s’inscrivent plusieurs essais qu’elle prépare ainsi qu’un livre, Le Corbusier penseur du musée, à paraître chez Flammarion. Né en 1972, Emmanuel Bérard a enseigné l’histoire du graphisme à l’école supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Reims, puis a assuré en 2007 le commissariat de l’exposition « Wim Crouwel, Architectures typographiques : 1956-1976 » à la galerie Anatome à Paris. Très intéressé par la question du design graphique, il contribue depuis une dizaine d’années à de nombreuses revues, comme Beaux Arts Magazine, Le Journal des Arts, ou encore Les Cahiers du Mnam.

Oiseaux is an aviary of 200 drawings made by Jochen Gerner between February 2019 and September 2020. Each of these birds was drawn with pigmented Indian ink felt pens on small-format school notebooks from China and India, on which lines and squares of different sizes appear. The series constitutes a graphic experiment aimed at exploring the potential of the grid, the superimposition of lines and the association of a reduced number of colours in the creation of feathers. By mixing dreamed and real birds, Gerner questions the links between the imaginary and reality in our daily lives, and teaches us that the fantastic is often to be found in the reality of everyday life.The book includes a text in french written by the philosopher Emanuele Coccia.

En 1971 John Berger imagine avec le producteur Michael Dibb la série Ways of seeing pour la chaîne de télévision de la BBC. Cette série rencontre à l'époque un grand succès. L'année suivante un livre du même nom, fruit d'une collaboration entre Berger, Dibb, Chris Fox, l'artiste Sven Blomberg et le graphiste Richard Hollis est publié. C'est bien la vision typographique d'une justesse irréfutable créée par ce dernier qui fera rentrer l'ouvrage dans la bibliothèque des designers. En sept essais, Berger rappelle les modalités de commande des peintures de la renaissance et démontre ainsi le pouvoir de la classe dominante. Il encourage ainsi le spectateur-lecteur à questionner les images qui l'entourent au quotidien. Ce re-edition française est un facsimile de l'édition originale anglaise parue en 1972.

Detail in Typography discusses in simple steps the factors that make text easy to read and good to look at. It provides, in its own form and manufacture, a demonstration of how books can be made. The book was published first, in several languages, in 1987 and 1988. Hochuli then developed the German text, publishing it again in 2005, in Switzerland. This new edition, by Éditions B42, will be available in german, french and english versions.
