Whenever the fighter pilots of the Black Sheep Squadron headed out on a mission in their F4-U Corsairs, they always flew in pairs. The guy in the other plane was known as your "wingman." Incredibly, when Bob McClurg joined the Black Sheep Marine Fighter Squadron in the South Pacific theatre during WWII, he barely had any flying hours under his belt. The colorful squadron leader, Greg "Pappy" Boyington, literally took McClurg under his wing and made an Ace fighter pilot out of him. McClurg flew many missions as Boyington's wingman in the distinctive "bent-winged" aircraft. The Corsairs could really take a beating, but they often lacked critical equipment such as working compasses or radios. Outmaneuvered by the swift Japanese zeroes, they often limped back to the base. But the zeroes were fragile, and, as McClurg says, after a morning combat mission there were usually a lot fewer lunches served at the Japanese base than there had been breakfasts. Boyington's combat tactics, which are reprinted in this book, were largely responsible for the high success rate of the Black Sheep. Several books have been written about the Black Sheep, but this is the only one besides Boyington's autobiography, "Baa, Baa, Black Sheep," and Frank Walton's "Once They Were Eagles." that has been written by one of the original squadron members. Thanks to a 1970s television series, the Black Sheep became a cultural icon, but the series did not give a completely accurate portrayal of the squadron, and McClurg sets the record straight. He emphasizes that these fighter pilots and their leader were not "misfits," as is commonly believed. Here is McClurg's story in his own words, with excerpts from his wartime journals accompanied by transcriptions of the actual combat reports from the National Archives, as well as several never before published photographs. The history, camouflage and markings of the Me 262 is described with the assistance of 40 WWII period photos, scale drawings, and excerpts from an original Me 262 engineering handbook. The Jumo 004 turbojet engine is also placed in its historical context as both a crucial asset and disappointing liability for the Stormbird. A full color 32 page photo essay of "Black X", Werknummer 500200 is outlined together with a history of its pilot and its service with II./KG 51. "Black X" is the last remaining complete Me 262 bomber, now housed in Australia. This fascinating Stormbird was repainted in the 1950s but its original wartime paint work was partially exposed by research in the early 1980s. Important elements of "Black X", including the cannon bay and fuselage interior are in extraordinarily good condition. Volume II of the history of the premier Luftwaffe fighter unit in the defence of the Reich, JG 300, written by Jean-Yves Lorant and Richard Goyat and translated from the original French and German by Neil Page. Rowan Bayliss writing in Scale Aircraft Modelling described Vol I as containing 'some of the most gripping personal accounts of air combat I have ever read'. Volume II again is chock full of dramatic & thrilling first hand descriptions from the pilots caught up in some of the desperate air battles over the Reich and the Eastern Front through late 1944 and 1945. The book opens with a description of the air battles during the Market Garden operation in mid-September before the 8th AF resumed their massive daylight raids over the Reich from late September 1944. The massive sorties over the Reich during November & December 1944 are covered in depth from both sides and a number of old myths are laid to rest with detailed accounts from the German pilots themselves. The descriptions of the ramming assaults of the Sturmgruppe & the death in action of Klaus Bretschneider are particularly interesting. The book provides in-depth coverage of little-known aspects of the history of JG 300 and the Luftwaffe fighter force during the late war months. The accounts of the deployment of the Sturmgruppe on the Eastern Front during February 1945 are hair-raising, while the fighters of JG 300 were in almost constant ground attack sortie action during March and April 1945 as the Allied armies pressed deep into Germany from both East and West. Karl Rusack's accounts of the Wasserbomb missions against the Danube bridges and the desertion of Ernst Schroeder are more highlights fro mthe last months of the war. All in all, plenty of of exciting action & reading. This is probably one of the the last and most detailed Luftwaffe Jagdgeschwader unit histories to appear in English.
