The Little Prince [Le Petit Prince], is a novella and the most famous work of the French aristocrat, writer, poet and pioneering aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1900-1944). The novella is both the most-read and most-translated book in the French language, and was voted the best book of the 20th century in France. After the outbreak of the Second World War Saint-Exupéry became exiled in North America. In the midst of personal upheavals and failing health, he produced almost half of the writings for which he would be remembered, including a tender tale of loneliness, friendship, love and loss, in the form of a young prince fallen to Earth. An earlier memoir by the author had recounted his aviation experiences in the Sahara Desert, and he is thought to have drawn on those same experiences in The Little Prince. Since its first publication in the United States, the novella has been adapted to numerous art forms and media, including audio recordings, radio plays, live stage, film screen, television, ballet, and operatic works. The Little Prince is a poetic tale, with watercolour illustrations by the author, in which a pilot stranded in the desert meets a young prince fallen to Earth from a tiny asteroid. The story is philosophical and includes social criticism, remarking on the strangeness of the adult world. It was written during a period when Saint-Exupéry fled to North America subsequent to the Fall of France during the Second World War, witnessed first hand by the author and captured in his memoir Flight to Arras. The adult fable, according to one review, is actually ..".an allegory of Saint-Exupéry's own life--his search for childhood certainties and interior peace, his mysticism, his belief in human courage and brotherhood.... but also an allusion to the tortured nature of their relationship." Though ostensibly styled as a children's book, The Little Prince makes several observations about life and human nature. For example, Saint-Exupéry tells of a fox meeting the young prince during his travels on Earth. The story's essence is contained in the lines uttered by the fox to the little prince: On ne voit bien qu'avec le coeur. L'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux. ("One sees clearly only with the heart. What is essential is invisible to the eyes.") Other key thematic messages are articulated by the fox, such as: Tu deviens responsable pour toujours de ce que tu as apprivoisé. ("You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.") and C'est le temps que tu as perdu pour ta rose qui fait ta rose si importante. ("It is the time you have lost for your rose that makes your rose so important.") "..Lorsque j'avais six ans j'ai vu, une fois, une magnifique image, dans un livre sur la Foret Vierge qui s'appelait "Histoires Vecues". Ca representait un serpent boa qui avalait un fauve. Voila la copie du dessin.On disait dans le livre: "Les serpents boas avalent leur proie tout entiere, sans la macher. Ensuite ils ne peuvent plus bouger et ils dorment pendant les six mois de leur digestion". J'ai alors beaucoup reflechi sur les aventures de la jungle et, a mon tour, j'ai reussi, avec un crayon de couleur, a tracer mon premier dessin. Mon dessin numero 1. Il etait comme ca: J'ai montre mon chef d'oeuvre aux grandes personnes et je leur ai demande si mon dessin leur faisait peur.."Le Petit Prince est une oeuvre de langue fran aise, la plus connue d'Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Publie en 1943 a New York simultanement en anglais et en francais, c'est un conte poetique et philosophique sous l'apparence d'un conte pour enfants.Le langage, simple et depouille, parce qu'il est destine a etre compris par des enfants, est en realite pour le narrateur le vehicule privilegie d'une conception symbolique de la vie. Chaque chapitre relate une rencontre du petit prince qui laisse celuici perplexe quant au comportement absurde des "grandes personnes". Chacune de ces rencontres peut etre lue comme une allegorie.Les aquarelles font partie du texte1 et participent a cette purete du langage: depouillement et profondeur sont les qualites maitresses de l'oeuvre. On peut y lire une invitation de l'auteur a retrouver l'enfant en soi, car "toutes les grandes personnes ont d'abord ete des enfants. (Mais peu d'entre elles s'en souviennent.)". L'ouvrage est dedie a Leon Werth, mais "quand il etait petit garcon". ABOUT AUTHOR: Antoine Marie Jean-Baptiste Roger de Saint-Exupery, ne le 29 juin 1900 a Lyon et disparu en vol le 31 juillet 1944 en mer, au large de Marseille, Mort pour la France, est un ecrivain, poete, aviateur etreporter francais.Ne dans une famille issue de la noblesse francaise, Antoine de Saint-Exupery passe une enfance heureuse malgre la mort prematuree de son pere. Eleve peu brillant, il obtient cependant son baccalaureat en 1917 et, apres son echec a l'Ecole navale, il s'oriente vers les beaux-arts et l'architecture. Devenu pilote lors de son service militaire en 1921 a Strasbourg, il est engage en 1926 par la compagnie Latecoere (future Aeropostale) et transporte le courrier de Toulouse au Senegal avant de rejoindre l'Amerique du Sud en 1929. Parallelement il publie, en s'inspirant de ses experiences d'aviateur, ses premiers romans: Courrier sud en 1929 et surtout Vol de nuit en 1931, qui rencontre un grand succes.A partir de 1932, son employeur entre dans une periode difficile. Aussi Saint-Exupery se consacre-t-il a l'ecriture et au journalisme. Il entreprend de grands reportages au Viet Nam en 1934, a Moscou en1935, en Espagne en 1936, qui nourriront sa reflexion sur les valeurs humanistes qu'il developpe dans Terre des hommes, publie en 1939.

Death Comes for the Archbishop is the story, not of death, but of life, for Miss Cather's Archbishop Latour died of having lived. She is concerned, not with any climactic moment in a career, but with the whole broad view of the career. There is no climax, short of the gentle end. One summer evening in the year 1848, three Cardinals and a missionary Bishop from America were dining together in the gardens of a villa in the Sabine hills, overlooking Rome. The villa was famous for the fine view from its terrace. The hidden garden in which the four men sat at table lay some twenty feet below the south end of this terrace, and was a mere shelf of rock, overhanging a steep declivity planted with vineyards. A flight of stone steps connected it with the promenade above. The table stood in a sanded square, among potted orange and oleander trees, shaded by spreading ilex oaks that grew out of the rocks overhead. Beyond the balustrade was the drop into the air, and far below the landscape stretched soft and undulating; there was nothing to arrest the eye until it reached Rome itself. It was early when the Spanish Cardinal and his guests sat down to dinner. The sun was still good for an hour of supreme splendour, and across the shining folds of country the low profile of the city barely fretted the skyline--indistinct except for the dome of St. Peter's, bluish grey like the flattened top of a great balloon, just a flash of copper light on its soft metallic surface. The Cardinal had an eccentric preference for beginning his dinner at this time in the late afternoon, when the vehemence of the sun suggested motion. The light was full of action and had a peculiar quality of climax--of splendid finish. It was both intense and soft, with a ruddiness as of much-multiplied candlelight, an aura of red in its flames. It bored into the ilex trees, illuminating their mahogany trunks and blurring their dark foliage; it warmed the bright green of the orange trees and the rose of the oleander blooms to gold; sent congested spiral patterns quivering over the damask and plate and crystal. The churchmen kept their rectangular clerical caps on their heads to protect them from the sun. The three Cardinals wore black cassocks with crimson pipings and crimson buttons, the Bishop a long black coat over his violet vest.
