Shortly after hostilities opened in South Carolina, the seat of war shifted to the Falls Church area as the Confederacy occupied the hills overlooking Washington, D.C. Events at the small village of Falls Church soon began making front-page headlines in newspapers around the world. The New York Times refererred to these events as "The Great Rebellion," and a British journalist , after witnessing events at Falls Church and Manassas, first applied the phrase, "Civil War," to the conflict engulfing America.

The book begins with an explanation of the types of Kansas barns, and then the author devotes a chapter to barns in each section of Kansas, beginning from the northeast. Most photos are of existing barns, in color, such as the one with steel tracks on the roof and a hay door painted with a very attractive pattern called Horses Run from Pharaoh's Fire. Some historical b/w photos remind the reader of the tough life of an old-time farmer; for instance, the owner of the Collingwood barn is shown in an early automobile, with the remark: "Driving a car like this could require work: note the three spare tires strapped to the back."

The history of Luray and Page County in the Civil War is extensive and while the intent of this book is not be be the definitive work on the subject, it is an "abridged" version of activities that took place in the area and facilitates an "eyes-on-history" experience where readers will have not only the opportunity to read about various events, but also to see the sites where these events/incidents took place. Avenue of Armies consists of nearly 300 miles worth of tours, including 94 stops at 70 different sites and buildings throughout Luray and Page County. Broken-up into thirteen chapters/tours, the reader has the opportunity to pick and choose which one or more they would like to take at a particular time. Therefore, the option exists to follow the tours as written, or create personalized tours using the numbering system of the individual sites.
