Scenes Along The Rails is the anchor title of a continuing series of books that will be devoted to the exploration of northeastern railroads during the first twenty-five years of this century. Period photographs--many appearing in print for the first time--feature stations, trackside industries, town views, and vacation resorts. The regional development of each rail line is summarized to provide historical background. The main text is composed of comprehensive, descriptive captions that personalize and add depth to the photographs. Detailed maps are included for quick reference. 
 Volume I consists of three parts. Part 1 focuses on the city of Scranton and the area to its north and east. The New York, Ontario &amp; Western; Delaware, Lackawanna &amp; Western; the Erie; and the Delaware &amp; Hudson are among the eight railroads covered in an informative tour of the most splendid era of railroading.

The Beach referred to in the title is Sylvan Beach, New York, a small community located on the eastern shore of Oneida Lake northeast of Syracuse, New York. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the Coney Island of Central New York was the summertime destination for crowds of fun seekers from as far away as Albany, Buffalo and Scranton. The development and eventual success of Sylvan Beach was due to the New York &amp; Oswego Midland (reorganized as the New York, Ontario &amp; Western) and, to a lesser degree, the Lehigh Valley Railroad. At the height of its popularity, Ontario &amp; Western and Lehigh Valley on-line ridership was augmented by throngs delivered by connections with the New York Central, the West Shore, and the Central's extensive interurban system.
