A recommendation to hold a symposium on contact problems in mechanics, sponsored by the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM), was made by the Engineering Mechanics Group of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Delft University of Technology. In order to outline the scope of the Symposium and select the place and date IUTAM appointed a Study-group of seven members in 1971. Following an interchange of views between these members the Study-group proposed to IUTAM to organise an International Symposium on the Mechanics of the Contact between Deformable Bodies on August 20-23, 1974, at Twente University of Technology, Netherlands, with a number of participants restricted to about 60, the outline of scope being as follows: Theoretical and fundamental experimental studies on the mechanical aspects of the contact between solid bodies: solid surfaces, area of contact, mechanics of friction in the broadest sense. Mathematical analysis of the normal contact and tangential contact (pure sliding, steady and unsteady rolling) between two (elastically, plastically and viscoelastically) deformable solid bodies on the basis of simplified models of the contact mechanism. Problems involving hydrodynamic lubrication as the main phenomenon should be excluded. IUTAM accepted this proposal and appointed in December, 1972, a scientific committee consisting of the following members: N. H. Arutjunjan (USSR), H. Buffer (BRD), L. E. Goodman (USA), A. Ju. ISIinskij (USSR), K. L. Johnson (UK), W. Nowacki (Poland), A. D. de Pater (Chairman, Netherlands) and D. Tabor (UK). Their main duty was the selection of lecturers and other participants.

Donald Grinberg has made a study which brings to light some aspects of Dutch housing which till now have been neglected in most analyses in books and maga- zines. Grinberg is a USA citizen and studied architecture at Harvard's Graduate School of Design. With the help of a Sheldon Fellowship and a grant from the Dutch Minis- terie van Volkshuisvesting en Ruimtelijke Ordening he was able to do the research for this book in The Netherlands for a year. Grinberg is working together with his wife, who is Dutch - one of the reasons he can read and speak Dutch. His specific situation as an American who can read publications in the Dutch language gave him a unique opportunity for access to original source material and recent studies. Until now, most publications about Dutch architecture in the period 1900-1940 included housing projects mostly because they were part of 'het Nieuwe Bouh2n'. This is the Dutch expression for the modern architecture resulting from action groups such as De Stijl, who introduced new space-time awareness as a basis for the expression of architecture. Oud, Mondriaan, Rietveld, and Van Doesburg of De Stijl were followed by the groups de 8 from Amsterdam and Opbouw from Rotter- dam. Members of these groups called themselves anti-aesthetic functionalists - Stam, Merkelbach, Van Tijen, Van Loghem, Duiker, Van der Vlugt, Van den Broek, and others.

Classical design and analysis techniques, many of which date back to the 1950's, are still predominantly used in the aerospace industry for the design and analysis of automatic flight control and aero-engine control systems. The continued success and popularity of these techniques is particularly impressive considering the radical advances in aircraft and spacecraft design and avionics technology made over this period. Clearly, an understanding of both the advantages and limitations of these methods is essential in order to properly evaluate the likely usefulness of more modern techniques for the design and analysis of aerospace control systems. One of the themes of this book is that the multivariable robust control methods it describes are logical and natural extensions of the more classical methods, and not replacements for them.
