This book has been nominated for the 2010 Tom Watson Brown Book Award through The Society of Civil War Historians. Henry Clay Robinett, a graduate of Delaware Military Academy, distinguished himself with valor during two Civil War battles - the defense of Battery Robinett during the Battle of Corinth (October 3-4, 1862), where he was wounded with a musket ball that creased his scalp, and later during the siege of Vicksburg. While honorable, and, given his two brevets, even somewhat distinguished, Robinett's service seems little different from that of any other young man, North or South, who went off to war in 1861. At a glance, Robinett, who emerged from the war as a Major, would hardly seem a likely subject for a biography. Unlike many who returned to civilian life after the war, Robinett pursued a career in the Regular Army. That career, however, was marred by increasingly erratic behavior that ended in his suicide just three years after the wear - the result of complex psychological problems that are carefully discussed in the book. From Broomsticks to Battlefields gives us a little more insight into the extent to which the horrors of war affect the personality and reminds us that historians and psychologists have barely begun to study the question of post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury among Civil War veterans. In the winter of 1972, after many years of armed conflict in Vietnam, President Nixon ordered Operation Linebacker II, the most massive aerial bombing campaign since the end of World War II. In this successful effort to end the Vietnam War, B-52s were sent from Thailand and Guam to attack key targets in North Vietnam that would force the North Vietnamese to capitulate. The primary targets were located in Hanoi and Haiphong, North Vietnam, which were the most heavily defended cities in the history of aerial warfare. Yankee Air Pirates tells the story of this campaign through the eyes of Spike, Bulldog, D-Kid, and the many other crewdogs (as B-52 crew members referred to themselves) who flew the massive Stratofortress on these dangerous missions. In the eleven nights of bombing, fifteen of the huge planes were shot down. Five of the aircraft made it to safety in Thailand before ejecting, and ten went down over Hanoi. Of the 61 crewdogs that went down over Hanoi, thirty-two were captured and later repatriated. The other 29 gave their lives. Who were these crewdogs? In the air, they were serious professionals. They were wise beyond their years, educated by experiences that most will never know. On the ground, they were rowdy, undisciplined, hard-drinking misfits. They were heroes in a time that many at home refused to recognize their heroism, and they were patriots when patriotism was a bad word in America. On October 25, 1983, on orders from President Reagan, American troops made an airborne assault on the Caribbean island of Grenada to rescue U.S. medical students whose safety had become a primary concern.
