Appearance is published on the occassion of a major solo exhibition of Canadian photo artist Jeff Wall at Kunsthalle Mannheim, Germany, and Mudam Luxembourg. Jeff Wall is best known for his large-format back-lit lightbox photographs which appear to be extravagantly composed film-stills. Alongside his lightboxes and black-and-white photographs, a third central group of works to be exhibited are his color C-Prints. The exhibition which includes numerous works on loan from international institutions, offers a new perspective on works which have rarely been presented in exhibitions.

For more than forty years Stephen Buckley, (b. 1944 Leicester, England) has concerned himself with addressing the major themes of the twentieth century through a personal style oscillating between the materiality of Kurt Schwitters, the dandyism of Francis Picabia, and the intellectual rigor of Marcel Duchamp. He takes the two most basic components of a conventional painting (canvas and stretcher) and makes multi-dimensional constructions, joins groups of single canvases together in overlapping structures, makes shaped canvases, cuts a stretcher with a variegated edge, stitches and weaves together strips of canvas, patches pieces of canvas onto another support, and adds cardboard tubing, rope, found objects and cut-out shapes. In the 1970s and 1980s, Buckley saw extended prominence in the art press, starting with claims that he was "the Punk Rock of contemporary painting" and ending with the title of "the ubiquitous Stephen Buckley." Since then, he has made some of his most compelling paintings, lush pop canvases full of symbols and color, a far cry from the pared-down, industrial feel of some of his early works.

<p>The Berlin-based photo artist Arina Dähnick follows in the footsteps of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in her study of city life and urbanity, the contrasts of inside and outside, of blurriness and focus, reflections and mirror images, and plays with the viewer’s perception. She discovered van der Rohe's architecture in the fall of 2012, when, after a thunderstorm, she perceived the Neue Nationalgalerie in a both fascinating and paradoxical spatial experience of boundless vastness—and a simultaneous feeling of being held. From then on she photographed the building under various conditions until its closure in 2015, following in Mies van der Rohe’s footsteps from Berlin to Brno, from Chicago to New York. She captured his most famous buildings—including the Villa Tugendhat, the Seagram Building, and the Lake Shore Drive Apartments—in impressive photo series that conveys her creative inspiration as well as the fascinating spatial experience of the architecture itself. <i>Architectural Portraits. The MIES Project </i>will be presented at the S. R. Crown Hall and the Goethe Institut in 2019, in parallel with this year’s edition of the Chicago Architecture Biennial. The exhibition will subsequently travel to Barcelona, Brno, and Berlin.</p>

<p><div>The world's most important exhibition of Urban Art--presented for the fifth time in 2019. <p><div>This is the first monograph on the Californian pop artist in more than thirty years, with a representative selection of works from 1957 to 2014. Billy Al Bengston is the very personification of the cheerful, carefree attitude towards life in California--in both his work and his personal life. After studying at the California College of Arts and Crafts and the Otis Art Institute, he exhibited at the legendary Ferus Gallery in 1957 and was the central figure among a group of artists that included Frank Gehry, Edward Kienholz, Ed Ruscha, and Ken Price. BAB, as he apostrophizes himself, inserts car and motorcycle parts as motifs into his otherwise abstract paintings. He uses lacquer and spray paint instead of oil and aluminum panels with dented surfaces instead of the traditional canvas. Her painting is a discovery. The works of Joanna Pousette-Dart (b. 1947) are deeply rooted in the vast expanse of the American prairie landscape, without ever committing themselves to a strict objectivity. As early as the 1970s, the artist abandoned the rectangular form of her canvas in favor of dynamically balanced panels that open out to the respective space. Mountain ranges, cloud formations, horizon lines, the landscape in changing light conditions at different times of the day and year, colored layers, and the line as the defining element--all this is contained in her shaped canvas paintings. Fulda, 1939; lives and works in Fulda) is a German sculptor and creator of conceptual, installation, and process-based art whose work often stands in relation to his, or the beholder's, body. For four decades, Walther designed artist's posters, a genre that has become an anachronism in our contemporary digital world. The artist's poster had its heyday in the era of art nouveau, classic modernism, and Pop Art. Yet despite the ascent of new media, virtually all artists of note to this day produce posters as well, and Franz Erhard Walther is no exception. This book is the first to gather his extensive output in the format in a single volume, rounded out by a wide-ranging survey of his designs and artist's books. Complemented by essays based on extensive research by Claus von der Osten and Rene S. Spiegelberger, the book provides insight into the influential artist's work. Franz Erhard Walther studied at the Werkkunstschule Offenbach am Main (today's Offenbach University of Art and Design) and the Städelschule Academy of Fine Arts in Frankfurt. He completed his education with a stint at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts, where Karl Otto Götz was his teacher and Gerhard Richter and Sigmar Polke were among his fellow students. At the age of 32, Walther was appointed to a professorship at the Hamburg Academy of Fine Arts (HFBK), where he taught until 2005. His works were on display at documenta 5, 6, 7, and 8, and in 2017, Walther received the Golden Lion at the 57th Venice Biennale.</div></p>

The artist interweaves creation and destruction, planning and chance into a complex, multi-layered reality and makes views into the spatial environment an integral part of her work. <p><div>Between French Modernism and the New York School: The idiosyncratic art of the pioneer of American Pop Art.&nbsp;The American painter, musician, and filmmaker Larry Rivers (* 1923 in New York City; + 2002 ibid.) is considered one of the most influential protagonists of the New York art scene in the period from the 1950s to the 1970s. He played with Miles Davis and Charlie Parker, was a close friend of Frank O'Hara, and pioneered Pop Art. In dealing with contemporary artist colleagues and historical role models, he always strived to making painting visible as a medium of reflection. From an early age, Rivers was preoccupied with French painting of the late nineteenth century. During his stay in Paris in 1961/62, he met Jean Tinguely and Niki de Saint Phalle, whereupon the range of materials he used was extended to wood, cardboard, and electric light. For the first time, the present volume-the first monograph in twenty years-sheds light on Larry Rivers' idiosyncratic art with a view to the tension between traditional French painting and Abstract Expressionism around Willem de Kooning. The catalogue accompanies the first European exhibition of Larry Rivers' work in forty years at the Ludwig Museum Koblenz.</div></p>
