Lien Botha is a Cape Town-based fine art photographer and installation artist, whose work has been widely exhibited and is to be found in major collections around South Africa. Artist, writer, arts administrator and curator David Koloane has established a reputation both locally and internationally. His paintings and graphics have been featured in major collections and exhibitions worldwide. His work reflects the socio-political landscape of South Africa both past and present. The conditions created by the apartheid system have, to a large extent, transfixed the human condition as the axis around which his oeuvre revolves. Fellow artist and novelist Veronique Tadjo is from Ivory Coast but has made Johannesburg her temporary home. She is the author of many acclaimed works of fiction for adults and children and has woven the strands of thought and theme in Koloane s work into an atmospheric text. Koloane's voice comes through in short discussions and musings on individual works, here documented in beautiful colour reproductions.

Deborah Bell is a leading Johannesburg painter, sculptor and printmaker whose work is created in dialogue with multiple worlds, texts and histories. She is also widely known for her collaborative projects with William Kentridge and Robert Hodgins. Bell's drawings, etchings and monumental clay sculptures possess a kind of 'mystical godliness'. Inspired by museum objects from ancient civilisations, including African, Babylonian and Egyptian, her work incorporates multi-layered references to past and present worlds. This book is the first overview of Bell's body of work and includes texts by several authors. Although William Kentridge is now well known for his films, drawings, and theatre productions, he began his artistic career learning etching at the Johannesburg Art Foundation under Bill Ainslie. He spent two years teaching printmaking at this Foundation and his earliest exhibitions featured his monotypes and etchings such as the Domestic Scenes series. William Kentridge Prints is the first book to focus specifically on Kentridge's formidable print oeuvre, filling a gap in published work on the artist to date. It is also the first major publication on William Kentridge to be published in South Africa. The book includes over 180 works and presents the full range and complexity of Kentridge's printmaking, from his linocuts of the 1970s to his recent sophisticated and distinctive Thinking Aloud drypoints created while he was working on his production of Mozart's opera, The Magic Flute, which premiered in Brussels in April 2005. David Krut began publishing William Kentridge editions in the 1990s and in 1997 compiled and edited a CD-ROM on the artist, the first publication on Kentridge to address the full range and complexity of his work. Krut compiled and edited the final print list for this book and contributed the Introduction, which gives a brief history of Kentridge's projects and collaborations with printers. The publication of this book coincides with a travelling exhibition that opened at the Faulconer Gallery, Grinnell College, Iowa in late 2004 and travels to other museums in the United States through 2007. William Kentridge Prints includes a Foreword by Lesley Wright, Director of the Faulconer Gallery at Grinnell College, the Introduction for the original exhibition catalogue by Kay Wilson, Curator of the Faulconer Collection, and an essay by the award-winning poet, critic, and translator Susan Stewart, Professor of English at Princeton University. Stewart has published four books of poetry and several critical texts including The Open Studio: Essays on Art and Aesthetics (University of Chicago Press, January 2005). In addition, the book includes a series of rare personal commentaries by Kentridge that give wonderful insight into the ideas and working methods of an obsessive and highly sophisticated printmaker.

The new Constitutional Court of South Africa was inaugurated in 2004, ten years after the demise of apartheid and South Africa's first democratic elections that brought the African National Congress and Nelson Mandela to power. The historic new building was the work of a team of young South African architects who had won the international competition for the design and building of the Court. Shortly after the opening of the Court, David Krut Publishing was approached to manage a competition for the design of a book on the architecture of this important building. The book design competition was won by Adele Prins of Flow Design and work on the book began in 2005. The Artworks Committee of the Constitutional Court wanted to create a beautiful book that would celebrate the Court and reflect the character of the building. The book would have to show not only the architectural innovations in the structure, such as the large-scale use of a passive heating and cooling system, but the atmosphere and mood of the Court, its openness, its ability to convey warmth and dignity at the same time, its reflection of the South African landscape and climate, its relationship to the surrounding metropolis, and its incorporation of the troubled history of the site - the old Fort Prison of Johannesburg - upon which the Court would stand. Early in the building of the Court, the architects had commissioned South African photographer Angela Buckland to document the building process. Her magnificent photographs of the site and the new building persuaded the Committee and the publisher that she should be the photographer for the book. Working closely with the architects, the book designer, and the photographer, Bronwyn Law-Viljoen - Managing Editor of David Krut Publishing - compiled the text for the book from a series of interviews with Constitutional Court judges, the architects, the contractor and builder, and others. The Artworks Committee did not want a technical architectural essay in the book but rather a narrative that would describe the character and impact of the building. This text is supplemented by architectural notes in the form of captions and annotations for architectural sketches and diagrams. Light on a Hill: Building the Constitutional Court of South Africa celebrates one of the most important buildings of a young democracy, a building that seeks to reflect the values and principles enshrined in South Africa's progressive Constitution.
