June 1940 – the Dunkirk evacuation ends in failure, as the British Expeditionary Force is ambushed and captured en masse in the French channel port. Lord Halifax, the appeaser Prime Minister, signs a peace treaty with Hitler, thus ending Britain’s brief war and effectively recognising German dominance of the European continent. May 1941 – Axis forces launch Operation Barbarossa, the largest land invasion in the history of warfare. By November, the Wehrmacht has taken Moscow, and their forces see out the harsh Russian winter.
