The author of this treatise is Imam Abu Ja'far al-Tahawi (239-321 A.H.), one of the leading authorities on the Hanafī madhab. The period Imam al-Tahawi lived in was the zenith of the dissemination of the Islamic sciences and he was just one of the giants that this era produced. To illustrate this: his teachers included Imām Isma'il ibn Yahya al-Muzani (a major student of Imām al-Shāfi'ī), those he collected hadith from included Imām al-Nasai (author of 'Sunan al-Nasai', one of the 'Sahih Sittah') and his students included the great muhaddith Imām al-Tabarani. The purpose of his treatise was to state the creed of the early scholars of the Hanafī madhab and to indicate its correlation with the views of Ahl al-Sunnah wa'l-Jamā'ah in general. As Shaykh al-Fawzan states in his explanation: "This entails a refutation against those who associate themselves with the Hanafī school of fiqh in modern or recent times: They associate themselves with the Hanafī school but contradict Imam Abū Hanīfah in creed; rather they only follow his views in jurisprudence. They adopt the creed of those who profess kalām (theological dialectic) and the logicians."

Ibn Kathīr said, “Scholars authored many titles on the depiction of the Prophet (pbuh), some of which were dedicated books and some of which were chapters in books. From the best books authored about the depiction of the Prophet (pbuh) is the book of Abū 'Īsa, Muhammad ibn 'Īsa al-Sulamī al-Tirmidhi, known as al-Shama'il” [Al -Bidaya wal Nihayah 8/385]. Abdul Razzaq al-Badr said, "This blessed book is from the best and most beneficial books written about the character and depiction of the Prophet (pbuh) and its author made it such an excellent work through his structuring of it and the hadiths he included therein. This is the reason why many scholars praise the book and consider it from the best books authored about this topic."

A COMMENTARY ON THE DEPICTION OF PROPHET MUHAMMAD

This is a translation of volume 1 & 2 of Shaykh Salih al-Fawzan's excellent 3-part commentary on the classical guide to the Hanbali madhab entitled Zad al-Mustaqni'. It covers the Book of Purification, the Book of Prayer, the Book of Funerals, the Book of Zakat, the Book of Fasting, the Book of Rites, the Book of Jihad and the Book of Food. Shaykh Bakr Abu Zayd said in al-Madkhal al-Mufassal, Zād al-Mustaqnī’ fī Ikhtisār al-Muqni’ is the text that came to be considered as the main source for the study of the Hanbalī madhab (school of jurisprudence) and quintessential for the students in the land of the Hanābilah (i.e. the Arabian Peninsula); particularly in the region of Najd. The people busied themselves reading, memorising and writing commentaries upon this book. This was carried out in study circles in the masājid where the scholars imparted knowledge to others and also in formal learning institutions. This book was studied in-depth so much so that some scholars provided explanations just upon the phrases within it so as to make it easy for the new learner. This was expanded to include proofs and evidences for those in the intermediate level. In the levels, thereafter, proofs and evidences were fused with the disputes that exist within the madhab and in comparison, to the other madhabs. Some scholars said: The texts of Zād and Bulūgh, Suffice for one to attain genius. They indicated through this [the importance of] Zād al-Mustaqni’ with regards to the study of fiqh and Bulūgh al-Marām with regards to the study of hadīth.No book as exemplary has been authored since it that contains as many important points (muhimāt) and issues (masā’il) as Zād.
