The late Giovanni Bussino, who had planned to translate all of Pirandello’s stories into English, himself died before he could fulfill that goal. Luigi Pirandello became famous as an author of drama; his innovative techniques, however, and his delving into the psychology of his characters, brought him world acclaim. The same drama is played out in each character presented in this volume, especially in, When I Was Crazy, A Horse in the Moon, and, The Reality of the Dream. In many ways, their lives’ situations become similar to those of our own. Like Pirandello’s characters, very often we find ourselves enclosed in jars that we build around ourselves only to realize that we have to break that jar in order to gain freedom. It is intended to introduce readers and students to both experimental and more traditional currents of Italian poetry during the second half of the last century. The first generation (poets born before 1935) includes such names as Nobel Prize winner Eugenio Montale and Pier Paolo Pasolini, together with avant-garde poets like Andrea Zanzotto and Edoardo Sanguineti. The poetry of the second generation (born between 1935 and 1945) reveals a clear need to come to terms with the radical experimentation of the past; included are the late Antonio Porta and Nanni Cagnone. She is married and lives in Milan with her husband and two children. GIAN PAOLO RENELLO: Gian Paolo was born in Monterotondo, near Rome, Italy. He received his Diploma di Maturità Classica, Laurea Cum Laude in Italian literature at the University of Pavia. Presently, he is completing his Doctorate in Belgium. He is the co-editor of Baldus, a literary magazine covering modern Italian culture. He is also coordinating an on-line project with the goal of placing Italian literature references on the Internet. Born in Boston, young Tullio Bertini was brought to Fascist Italy by his father, who wished to start a new life near Lucas, Tuscany. A heart attacked almost killed him, how-ever, and Tullio and his mother had to quickly learn rules of survival in a strange land. Matriculated in the local school system, Tullio was soon confronted with the brutal reality of a war which pitted his beloved America against his newly adopted country. The war got more brutal when German army soldiers commandeered Tullio’s town. But, in September 1944, he and his family were liberated by the 92nd Infantry Division of the U.S. Fifth Army, which was comprised entirely of black soldiers. Tullio returned to the United States in February 1946 with his mother and father and settled in San Francisco, where Tullio’s father died in 1946 from a fatal heart attack. Tullio, however, managed to graduate from high school, from San Mateo Junior College, and from San Francisco State College, having become a teacher, a school administrator and even elected Mayor of Millbrae, California.

Garibaldi, of course, is best known as the Father of Modern Italy. Few people know, however, that President Lincoln sought Garibaldi’s services on behalf of the Union Army. Fewer people know that Garibaldi also fought many land and naval battles in Brazil. Anita Doarte, Luigi Rossetti, and John Griggs were Garibaldi’s closest comrades during Rio Grande do Sul’s War for Independence from Brazil—Garibaldi’s formative years as a military leader. Because none of the three left a memoir, Professor William Rosenfeld wrote one each for them, as they were Garibaldi’s closest comrades. To help set the three memoirs in their proper historical context Professor Rosenfeld invented one additional voice, that of a scholar-editor, who furnishes the context for each memoir.
