Robert Brown was one of the first professional botanists to visit Australia. He accompanied Flinders on his official circumnavigation of Australia in the ship Investigator, and later collected extensively in New South Wales and Tasmania. The result was published, in part in his Prodromus (1810), and in other shorter works, particularly on Proteaceae. Brown came to be recognized as the leading British botanist of his day. His extensive herbarium, of which the main set is lodged in the British Natural History Museum, was also extensively consulted by other botanists, and is particularly rich in Australian type material. While in Australia Brown also made zoological, mineralogical and anthropological collections. Many of these are now lodged in British institutions. Brown’s Prodromus was published before Flinders’ account of the voyage, and Brown was therefore obliged to use his own manuscript names for localities visited (‘Bay I’ etc.). His specimen labels, too, were somewhat cryptic, containing only minimal information. This has presented later researchers with difficulties in properly localizing the Brown collections. However, Brown kept a diary during the 5 years of his Australian visit, and this provides additional notes about many of his collections and of the localities visited. The diary is housed in the British Natural History Museum, largely inaccessible to scientists. It has now been transcribed by the late T.G. Vallance, E.W. Groves and D.T. Moore, and the entries extensively annotated and interpreted. Brown used many temporary nicknames for the plants he collected, and these are now tied to currently accepted names. Brown’s diary entries are cross referenced to and supplemented by those of his companions, Matthew Flinders and Peter Good, as well as letters to and from Brown’s patron, Joseph Banks, and others. Illustrations include maps of collecting sites, and paintings by the artist Ferdinand Bauer who accompanied Flinders and Brown on the Investigator voyage. The book will be invaluable to botanists, zoologists, geologists and anthropologists, both for the background information supplied for the Brown collections, and for his incidental observations on the Australian landscape, its occupants and its biota at a time before extended European settlement.

150 genera and 869 accepted species and infraspecific taxa of liverworts and hornworts are listed from the eight States and mainland Territories of Australia. Genera and species are listed alphabetically, and c. 1100 synonyms that have been applied to Australian specimens are inserted under the appropriate species name. Nomina nuda, names of uncertain application and those reported in error from Australia are appended. Each species entry is accompanied by a list of post-1982 literature that provides locality details, descriptions, identification keys and/or habitat information. This completes a modern trio of catalogues on the Australian lichen and bryophyte floras, together comprising more than 5,000 taxa and representing a significant component of the national biota.

Undersea Jewels is a guide to the nudibranchs of south-eastern Queensland. The book is easy to use and, as these animals are among the most colorful and charismatic of marine creatures, a pleasure to peruse. It covers 277 species of nudibranch (in the broad sense, i.e. = opisthobranchs) all found on the Sunshine Coast of southern Queensland, but most also found elsewhere in Australian seas and many occurring in the broader tropical Indo-West Pacific Region. Beautifully illustrated, with photos by naturalist/diver Gary Cobb and colleagues, and text by marine biologist, Richard Willan, the book provides a bridge between professionals and amateurs, and will do much to raise and enhance awareness of the marine invertebrate community, and to encourage its conservation.

In this beautifully illustrated volume on Australian tenebrionid beetles, higher-level groups are reviewed, keys provided to enable identification to genus and subgenus level, and notes are provided on relationships, distribution and biology. A catalogue of all Australian taxa down to subspecies level is presented, including synonymy relevant to the Australian fauna, type localities, and location of types. Eight subfamilies, 43 tribes, 216 valid genera and subgenera. 1595 valid species are listed. The senior author, Dr Eric Matthews, in retirement an Honorary Fellow at the South Australian Museum, is well known among entomologists and ecologists for his studies on beetles, particularly tenebrionids, and his very useful set of keys to beetle groups of South Australia. Dr Patrice Bouchard, research scientist at Agriculture and Agri-food Canada, in Ottawa, studied the evolution and relationships of Australian rainforest Tenebrionidae during his Ph.D. He is also interested in the nomenclature and biogeography of darkling beetles. Together, Matthews and Bouchard bring us a thorough summary of knowledge of Australian Tenebrionidae.
