Ragnar Axelsson is one of Iceland's best-known photojournalists. For over 15 years, he has been documenting people in the North Atlantic. In this book of nearly 200 photographs, Axelsson turns his lens on the Arctic, which is warming faster than any other region on earth. Axelsson's gorgeous photographs, mostly in black and white, show vast glaciers, sleds gliding across ice, and houses mostly buried in snow, but they also depict how the Inuit's way of life is transforming drastically as a result of climate change, prefiguring the enormous changes that are on their way to the rest of the world.

For the 2009 Venice Biennale, Ragnar Kjartansson occupied a room, painting his model, Páll Haukur Björnsson, who wore only a Speedo swimsuit and lazily drank beer and smoked, while Mozart and Wagner sounded from a record player. Over the course of several months, onlookers saw the paintings piling up in the room. This volume records the paintings and performance.

Easily one of the most important Japanese artists of the recent past, Yoshitomo Nara (born 1959) has rocketed to worldwide fame for his darkly whimsical figures that put a creepy twist on childhood ingenuousness. For his 2009 exhibition at the Reykjavik Art Museum, Nara presented his works within the wooden shipping crates in which they had been transported to the museum. Pictures were hung on the outside of the crates, and figures lurked within their interior nooks. This beautifully produced board book records and continues the show's themes of containment and transportation: it features windows that can be opened to reveal the youthful figures ensconced within their confinements, waiting to be freed by the participation of the reader. Yoshitomo Nara was born in 1959, in Aomori, Japan. He is one of the leading artists of Japan's Neo Pop movement. His drawings and paintings are informed by a range of influences, from manga and anime to punk rock. He has also worked in sculpture, ceramic and large-scale installation. In the fall of 2010, the Asia Society in New York presented the first major New York exhibition of his work.

The series First House, Second House and Third House, some of his best-known works, are shown here together for the first time. Each plays with the notions of inside/outside and enclosed/exposed. Starting from the concept of an inside out house, the works can be said to include the entire universe within but also to simultaneously shut it out. Mirroring each other, each series creates a unique dynamic when juxtaposed with the others.

Dancing Horizon 1970–1982 is a comprehensive collection of the photographic work of Icelandic artist Sigurdur Gudmundsson (born 1942), the "Nordic father of Conceptual photography," focusing on a critical period in his development. In the 1970s Gudmundsson made a famous series of conceptual photographs he called Situations, in which the artist is posed with various props―for example, balancing a wooden slat on his head to make visual contact with the horizon in the background, or digging himself into the grass. Influenced by the informality and unpredictability of international Fluxus, which Gudmundsson encountered in the late 1960s as a member of the progressive Icelandic artists' collective Súm, the Situations are humorous, absurd and lyrical; they have been characterized as "visual poems." More than 80 artworks are reproduced here (many of them rarely exhibited or published), along with previously unpublished studies.

Every autumn, Icelandic farmers travel into the country’s interior to collect their sheep from the summer pastures. This process has remained unchanged for centuries and the search is still conducted primarily by horse or on foot. For the past 25 years, Icelandic photographer Axelsson (born 1958) has observed farmers on their roundups in one of the most difficult but also magnificent grazing terrains of the Icelandic wilderness. Axelsson has been a staff photographer for Iceland’s largest newspaper since 1976, and his stunning iconic images of the Arctic have earned him a worldwide reputation as a skilled documentary photographer. The first edition of Last Days of the Arctic, published in 2010, won critical acclaim, with photo features in The New York Times. Nominated Book of the Year in the (London) Times, it was described as “a gift for the eyes, mind and heart.” Axelsson’s documentary of the same name was aired on PBS (in the station’s Global Voices series) in 2012, also to great acclaim.
